Finished making this today! I’m pleased with the lettering and design style. Different from what I usually make. I’m going have to refine this style and work on more projects like this! I’m heading to the airport in a bit to go pick up my brother. Excited to see him and his girlfriend. Will update you with more work tomorrow.
Here’s a link to the Startup Weekend post I finally got up on Medium! I’m pleased with it and hope you take the time to read it. I spent a lot of time on lettering the Thank You. I’m happy with the results and will continue working on similar techniques.
Got some good art projects on the way. Been trying to get as much done as possible during the day, but gotta do some other work and family time too. Here’s a little preview of an upcoming project I’ve been working on for the last couple days. Got a lot to work on. The lettering styles don’t match as well when transferred from hand drawn to digitally illustrated. I spent awhile vectoring it only to scrap that whole lead because it didn’t fit the style I want. I have to add the last words in the quote which are ‘I am one’ and design the illustration. It’s from the book The Abyss Surrounds Us by Emily Skrutskie. She asked me to do this since I had a few lazy days of waking up after 9 AM. It’s technically punishment for waking up late, but I always have fun working on these so maybe I should sleep in more.
I hope to have a finished version done by the end of the weekend, but no promises since I have so different projects to do! I always get so busy working on gifts during the holiday season. Not to mention that now I’ve been asked to learn Sketch for UI/UX design work. It’s not hard but it’s a different workflow from Adobe products so the key commands are going to take some getting use to. I just finished listening to the Animalators episode with John Schlemmer the Motion Lead at Google. I’m fascinated by the idea of incorporating motion into UI. I’m going to read through the Material Design Motion guidelines for some extra homework. I’m really interested in how all of that works. Who knows maybe it’ll get me a job at Google? Probably not, but I’m interested in reading that nonetheless.
Here’s a quick update on that dog Xmas gift I’m working on. Not satisfied with the coloring style, might return to that black and white version but clean it up. It could be a case of more detail too. I’m in that middle area of not sketchy nor polished enough.
That does it for the art updates of the day. I will be working on lots tomorrow so tune in for the rest of the work and final versions!
I drew a dog. Now I have to finish shading it and colorize before drawing another dog. Also started some other work for the holiday gifting. Just a lot of animation stuff to do as well as working on things for the Adobe Creative Residency. Starting on some of the projects related to the ideas I have. Also gotta get this blog in order. I haven’t decided if I want to continue posting in 2017. If I do then I need to organize the blog better, especially with all the art I create. I’ll let you know in the upcoming weeks what I decide.
So I made a small step for my website update. Not quite a rebrand, yet, but I wanted to get new projects up for a job application. So the portfolio page has been updated and populated with a few more projects for viewing. I am working to navigate the site toward videos and illustration eventually. The rebranding process has been quite difficult because I’ve been wavering in the audience due to what my goals are. I’ve been confused about pushing toward hiring managers, freelance work, or just personal projects. They’re all a little different audience wise so picking the projects has been weighing on me. The job app reminded me to just post the projects and get it all up there.
Of course, I have more to add and change, but trying to live by the quote of ‘Perfect is the Enemy of Good.’ I was reminded of this today. I realized I’ve been stalled by the rebrand because of the need for the perfect way of posting projects and the perfect bio…etc. It’s been exhausting on my mental health because I keep working toward a goal only to doubt it because I’m not covering another target audience. Just being reminded of the quote changed my whole perspective on the website today. Better just to finish and have some little misalignments in the design than to continuously start over because it’s not perfect. Glad I made progress.
I also drew this earlier today. I’m calling them all Cactus Rats. Would be an interesting project to illustrate more of these Cactus Rats and give them all little stories…might be an interesting side project.
Till later friends. Remember Perfection is the Enemy of Good.
Imamakeathing. Worked on a class for Skillshare today. I decided to make a class on how to create a planet in photoshop. More updates on that later since will have to film and edit the short video classes together. You can see a quick example of what I’m aiming for below. Just a very simple class to learn basics of photoshop blend modes, brushes, masks, and filters.
I originally had the plan to do some lettering, but I didn’t feel comfortable teaching it because most lettering skills I’ve learned come from Skillshare. No need to over saturate the market when I can direct people to the classes I learned from. Plus, I feel this style is underrated and super easy to teach. I have a lot of photoshop knowledge so I want to teach what I know and understand. I’ve been using photoshop since my middle school days so it’ll be nice to teach some of the methods I’ve learned.
On another note, I have a silly animated dinosaur which I’m still debating is the right type of animation for the application I’m applying for. I don’t want to push the project longer than tomorrow so just whipping up quick animations styles. I love the tribal look but am iffy on the ‘rawr’ part. I don’t think I have enough time to test walk cycles out, but it’d be a fun challenge for the future. Colors still being picked and still deciding how to accurately put into the application without disrupting the flow. It’s relevant but I have to make sure the hierarchy is the right balance of animation skills and good responses for questions.
Excited for what tomorrow brings! I have to get some overdue lettering done for a friend, some reading, get the rebrand finalized, and finish a job application…all while still hanging with the fam. If it gets too hectic the reading might get thrown to the last moment. Hope not, I have a ton of library books I want to finish before they get returned! Night friends! Hope your days are productive!
I drew a dinosaur. Mind you this is relevant for a job application…well partially relevant. I suppose I don’t actually need to be drawing it…but I want to. This is just a sketch, I got carried away with the drawing. Plan to simplify down the dinosaur into some shapes I can animate and do some more research on possible movements. For now enjoy this doodle. I will have a different version of it tomorrow or a different type of dino. Depends on time.
Got a little too busy working on some other projects so have to finish website rebrand tomorrow. I did procrastinate earlier in the day by making a digital art project. Thought I’d share that one and one I created a couple days ago. -yawn- Gotta wake up early to finish this last leg of my project.
Interview, two pots of tea, and lots of family time. Since I had minimal productive time towards working on the rebrand and animation stuff here’s a link to an awesome video to watch. It’s a longer than the usual animation inspiration so just going to post one tonight.

I love these because the combination of animation with education is high quality and delightful. I love learning through art and this is a perfect example of why I love motion graphics.
I woke up and drew a fantastic creation today. I am not sure why I thought it was going to be relevant for a rebranding. I’m really miffed at my morning idea. I remember looking at an amazing animation and being really excited to create something. Pulled out the Cintiq and opened Photoshop. And then drew a cat. Specifically my family cat, Zorro. Spent several hours refining the illustration and style that related to a motion graphic I have no script or plot for or idea for that matter, but I know it was meant for animating. I specifically used my own brand colors, including new ones I added as a part of the rebranding, and just went all in creating.
Somewhere around 3pm, I realized I don’t know why the drawing of the cat is relevant to ANYTHING. It’s not going into an animation, it’s not work related, it’s not a gift, nor is it supposedly for my website. But now I have an illustration of my cat. I really don’t know why I drew him. My brain decided it was a good idea at some point between 9 am and 10 am because I drew several ideations of him from 10am to 3pm. I am genuinely confused about why I did this and have spent the last few hours trying to find the connecting thought. How did I go from awesome mograph to website rebrand to drawing my cat?
From the general blasphemy of my mind, I present you with screenshots of what I created today. I’ll see if I can find a way to bring into my rebrand.
