It’s been a long time. Well, life is crazy and I just haven’t sat down to write you all like I did last year and for the beginning of this year. So, with only two months left of 2017 and a whole lot of crazy going on, I felt I should bring this back. Just a general life update and a new place to document again.
So, I’ve been working for VaynerMedia for the last few months. It’s been amazing and very chaotic with lots of moving to New York City and within the city, meetups, making new friends, parties, and so much more. I haven’t documented the last few months of my life as well as I like for posting here so if you’ll bear with me. I plan on making a couple projects to explain those months and digging through my phone photos. Until then, just wanted to pop in and say stuff is coming.
Currently, I have a lot of writing to do since it’s National Novel Writing Month. I’m creating a lot of fun content over on my Instagram which I recommend going over to if you want to keep better tabs on everything I’ve been creating as well as my day-to-day.
Basically, I’m writing again. I’m debating if I want to do a daily journalling like I did in 2016, starting on Jan 1st. I think it’ll be good for keeping track of all of the amazing things I’ve been creating and doing and will continue doing. I get busy and there is only so much time in a day, so I don’t want to over-commit myself to a daily blog if I don’t have the time or energy to do so. But anyways, I’m rambling.
So Hi. How are you? Anyone still read this strange and weird journal I crafted about my projects? Excited to write again friends.
It’s been awhile.
I took a little break from publishing posts here after the hustle of posting all the time last year. Last time I picked three words for the year: Make, Move, & Empower. I still plan to give this blog better organization and a layout update. I’ve been hustling at some other projects. One of the reasons why I didn’t want to have a daily habit this year is that it prioritizes quantity over quality. The exception to this is my drawing habit because I really want to improve at drawing humans and animals. I’m replacing most of my daily habits with larger scale and longer projects. They are now weekly based rather than daily allowing for me to give attention to detail and improve the quality.
Additionally, with the upcoming blog layout update, I want to change the theme of this blog. It’s not going far off from 2016. I started this with the intention of improving my storytelling ability, but it became an art blog. I posted more artistic process and inspirational pieces than stories last year. I don’t remember if I officially declared the shift in focus during 2016, but I am for 2017. More quality content will be heading your way as a result. I have a few articles that I didn’t get to during 2016 that I’ll have up next week and then I’m planning out a content calendar.
Plans are to update Monday & Fridays. Mondays I’ll leave as more fun and informative art posts while Fridays are inspiration and freebies for myself. Additionally, follow me on Twitter for full updates on other projects. I’m plunging into the illustration world by creating a motion comic based on a story I’ve had in my head for what feels like forever! It’s the same one that I’ve tried to write for NaNoWriMo. If anyone followed through the year and remembers me drawing random character designs or my character’s house, that’s the same story. I decided to take it on in a new medium. That gets updated every Tuesday & Thursday. Wednesdays are lettering days. I’m leaving weekends free for fun!
Mondays & Fridays: Blog Post Here!
Tuesdays & Thursdays: Motion Comic over on Tumblr!
Wednesday: Lettering! Here
Once again, check out my twitter if you want to see any updates and a bunch of figure drawing art I’ve been practicing! My Instagram also gets the occasional update or throwback art.
Thanks for reading! Updates soon!
I’ve decided to forgo the 365-day habit this year, this is a change after two years. I love daily habit building resolutions, but I find that I don’t really work on those projects but scramble something, anything, together last minute. I’m working toward quantity rather than quality. In some ways, this is great for measuring progress and keeping me going, but at the end of the year, I don’t know how much quantifying has helped. It’s changed me somewhat but I need something better for 2017.
As I work toward many different goals I have picked three words of value to keep to. The first word is Move. This word represents movement in time, steps toward or away from a goal. I hope to move forward, but I must not stand still. Although 2016 I stepped forward in my mindset I did not move far in career and location. I want to avoid being still. The word ‘move’ also applies to getting my body moving in exercise. Lastly, as a love of animation, I want to move those drawings and create. Which leads to my second word, Make.
Make comes from Neil Gaiman’s Make Good Art speech. I remind myself to make good art no matter what has happened in life, good or bad. I want to make 2017 my year. I create my year and I will make my projects and goals happen.
The third word has always been a word I held close to my heart but for some reason never dare to work on. It’s Empower. I want to inspire and empower others to do what they love to make and move their world. I plan to find ways to enable myself so that I can build others up. I like the word empower over things like inspire and value because it means that I’m helping others to grow and feel confident to do things themselves. It’s permission to be your own boss to allow someone to claim their rights. Just thinking about the word gives it power and grows the idea. It’s a beautiful blossoming idea in my mind and I want to take the strength of that word and give it others as well as empower myself.
There are many projects and goals that I have but I want to stand by these words for the year. To use them as a measurement for my growth. If you’re still looking for what to do for your New Year’s Resolutions perhaps pick a word or more. I suggest keeping it to three at max because words hold weight. Picking too many might leave you confused and conflicted. I feel like these three are mine for the year and I hope they will guide me to make good choices with my time, relationships, work, and goals.
I’ll be showing more of my projects in 2017 and how these words help me create them. Please bare with me for the next week while I redo my website and clean up my internet homes. Lots of dusting to do!
Thanks for reading and Happy New Year!
Made so much progress on a lettering for the Startup Weekend post, but it’s not quite done. It’s outlined and mostly inked, but still has some finishing touches I want to do tomorrow. I’m getting sleepy which leads to mistakes. Would rather sleep and finish in the morning then press on and end up with wobbles.
I realize I abandoned the 30 Days of Productivity challenge I started. I have to decide if I want to bring it back, but I can’t say that I’ve been super lazy recently. I do need to refocus efforts on the job search. I’m going out tomorrow with a bunch of resumes to hunt for seasonal positions. Not excited, but I’ve been saying I need to get one for months now…so need to suck it up. Gah, reading back over that just makes me realize how whiny I’ve been this entire year. I revisit that idea at least once a month. Really need to stop complaining.
I’m having one of those moments where I reflect upon on the ‘fails’ of this year…the year isn’t even over. Realizing there’s only one month left and I haven’t accomplished all these goals I set out on. I’ve done a lot, but I’ve also wasted a lot of time and opportunities. Trying not to regret anything. Just trying to figure out what I can get done before the year ends and what I need to do to accomplish these goals.
With one full month of the year left I want to make a couple focused goals for myself. I’ve gone through a lot of different mindsets and ideas over this year, so the goals I made in January have changed a bit.
- Make one more animation. Either a general Holiday animation or a specific Christmas Present for a family member. I want to challenge myself to make a narrative piece.
- Proposal for the Adobe Creative Residency drafted. I think I’ve neglected to say that I am applying for the residency, but I am. I want to make some really fun animations and work with people from Adobe. I’ve spent a large portion of the year thinking about this and feel that I would thrive in that environment. I’m not positive on what my project is going to be about, but I have a couple projects I want to test out this month.
- Apply for a few more jobs and internships in case I don’t get the residency. If it doesn’t work out I want to make sure that I’m still learning.
There are other goals, but I am prioritizing these three. Only one full month left of 2016. It’s time to focus and get shit done.
Sorry, my post is late. I had it almost ready to go and then I locked myself out of my computer. It’s fixed now.
Day one productivity challenge and minimalism.
Writing wise, I’m still working on the second half of that goal. Being distracted by SNL. The 10 minutes this morning went by fast! I felt like I’d hardly started when my timer went off. Might make that goal a bit longer if the following days feel the same.
The cover letter goal is near finished. It’s been written and edited with prep for email. I still have to send but have a couple loose ends to tie up. Will send out along with my other cover letter later. Art wise I promise you I made something but it goes along with my cover letter. I don’t want to share it since it’s directly related to the companies I’m applying for.
Minimalism goal achieved! I decided to get rid of this writing fiction guide. I use online guides so this guy has been gathering dust below my bookcase.
I spent a large portion of today working on a Halloween GIF for School of Motion’s Jack Mo’ Lantern contest. So many transitions and I really haven’t created much in Photoshop’s timeline since early this year, so, I ended up learning about onion skins and all the timeline features. So many transitions between those shapes. T’was crazy.
Do not research bugs and animals that bite and sting before you go to bed. NOPE. JUST NOPE. You get things like this.
Today was one of those days where I thought it was going one way and then it just straight up went the other direction. In both good and bad ways. The morning started off with trying to be a productive day but instead I went in circles. Follow that up with what I thought was going to be meeting up for coffee with a new friend and instead turned into a tour of Sphero with a networking moment. My brain is still a bit mushy from the experience. Wasn’t expecting that at all and now I’m just utterly excited.
Of course, now I need to make up for minimal productivity by waking up early and working on projects. And have a long interruption to see Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children with a friend in the middle of the day. Followed up by more work and Mochat at 7 PM. Gonna be an interesting day.
Pardon, my lateness tonight. Got distracted watching SNL and Bones with the fam.
A quick update since I’m running late tonight. My website update is near done. Ran some errands in the middle of the day so I only got a half day work on it. I have it near done. Just one more page to add and then some proper captions. I have a lot of filler text in there right now, so, will be devoting a portion of tomorrow to writing captions. Def want to get it up before the weekend is over so I can email companies.
NaNoWriMo plotting is coming along. Found a few resources online to work on the plot and character development. If time allows I want to write a short story in the world I’ve created. It’ll help give me a grasp on the location and the narration I want to use. Some sketching will be heading your way too. Concept art is always a huge help in developing stories for me. Excited for November!
I also need to carve some time out to finish animating the last frames to my NaNo Seeking Writer project, as well as my Selfi. Been neglecting those two and just need to do. There’s also a GIF contest due on Friday I want to enter. A big animating week is coming up. I also have a Halloween lettering idea, but I don’t know if I have time to create it. Probably just need to wake up earlier and have more caffeine. Will plan tonight before I sleep so that I don’t get overwhelmed with the projects. Worse case scenario, I leave the Halloween lettering idea till next year, and delay my Selfi project by a week. Gonna aim to do all the things tho.
So hope your weekend is going well and your upcoming plans for the next week are exciting! I’m also really excited for Sunday’s Inktober theme. Been waiting to draw this animal since I saw the prompt! Till then view the smallest bird ink drawing below!
My website is coming along well. If I just put Citrus on for all day tomorrow I’ll be able to finish it for tomorrow. Just need to keep me from getting distracted. I’m attending Creative Mornings in Denver tomorrow, but after that, I will be working on the website till it’s done!
Here’s a fun video to watch and my inktober drawing after that.
Anacondas are a little scary especially after watching those Animal Planet videos of them trying to constrict children. D;
So much to do and so many distractions. Gotta hustle on that website. I went to the art store today to refill the art supplies I’ve been using for Inktober. Also got some new books from the library. And then I got distracted by the debate, Orphan Black, and Buffy the Vampire Slayer. So a partial productive day, but not the most optimal use of my time.
I will link you to another distraction, but a good one! Sara Dietschy has a series called That Creative Life which I love! She did one with Chase Jarvis. Absolutely love the advice from this. Gonna have to letter some quotes at some time in the future. I need to just have a lettering day. Letter all day and all night inspirational quotes from Sara Dietschy videos. Maybe once I finish all the other projects I have going on this week and next…oh wait I have NaNoWriMo after that…I’ll find time. Just gotta stop watching TV shows.
