Updates & an Octopus Escape

Working on redoing my website. It’s coming along nicely, but as usual taking a bit of time. I’m aiming for an official relaunch by the end of this week. Hopefully sooner, but I don’t want to get my hopes up since I have other projects and errands to run during these next few days.  Plus I want to take my time to make it a good site. I rushed the last redesign, so making sure this one is good. Along with the

Along with the update I want to wrap up two animations by the end of next week. Those being the Selfi (you remember that one, right? No? linky) and my NaNoWriMo Seeking Writer. If I somehow accomplish these two I am also going to be doing a little NaNo vlog. That one doesn’t need as much editing and animating so hoping I can accomplish that in a single morning. I just know I need to finish these guys. Been caught up in so many different directions I lost a bit of sight on the projects I’ve started. I just want to finish these two videos and my website!

Glad that I still have this writing habit going. Thank you to anyone that has read one post or all of them! I appreciate that you came to visit! Thanks for reading! ❤

Inktober Orangutan

Illustration of an Orangutan tonight for Inktober. I promise more content other than reposting my inktober illustrations  will start again. I’m preparing for NaNo WriMo so some content from that project will start appearing. I’m preparing for NaNo WriMo so some content from that upcoming project will start appearing. I’m determined to win this year and would love to share illustrations and brainstorming content with you during the month. I’m debating about vlogging the event, but I don’t want to take too much time away from writing for video editing, so still on the fence about it. Also unsure how entertaining that would be. Maybe just a weekly vlog update? Film every day but only post updates on Saturdays or Sundays might be the solution. I’ll leave that musing for another day.

Will update you as decisions get made. Thanks for reading!

Celebrate with a Thank You

First off, Thank you to Douglas Geller of the Dreamer Blog! He featured me! He’s awesome and has a lot of great dreamers over there. Take some time to go check out the interviews he has done with different people. It’s fun to hear from people what their goals are and how they’re tackling their plans. The talent he has selected ranges from all over from sports to startups to comedy. He’s only just begun this amazing blog and I’m excited to see what else he creates! Make sure to go read the interviews he’s done over at The Dreamer Blog and check out his book! Thanks again for the feature!

Today’s Inktober is a Giant Panda.

It was also my birthday and I’m thankful for every moment I got to spend hanging with family and enjoying my day. I spent most of it working on the kind of art and design that I love to create. The kind that makes me happy and is therapeutic. It was great and a lovely reminder that I’m closer making my dreams come true! Thank you for reading these blog posts and coming along on my journey as I continue to work towards my goals.

For my birthday I wrote down 24 things I am thankful for. Debating if I want to share them with you or not…Let me know in a tweet if you think I should. If you had a birthday recently, how did you celebrate?

NaNo Seeking Writer | WIP

I spent 8+ hours animating today, and about 8+ hours yesterday. I didn’t make it too far last night before I crashed despite a zillion cups of coffee. At least it reinforced my love for motion design. There are not many other project types that keep my attention that long, aside from lettering. It was nice animating all day.

Aside from tons of animation, I drank a lot of coffee. I do plan to keep animating the title sequence. Due to time constrictions, I pulled out some of the boards. It got overwhelming animating every square and trying to figure out the shape layers. So many null objects. So many. It took me a couple hours to get in the groove. I realize I should have begun animating last week, but I just wanted to keep designing!

This project is so much fun and I’m happy with the current result, although I want a complete version of it still. For that portfolio! I didn’t even get a chance to tinker with the sound design! For future projects, I’ll make sure to start animating sooner.

I’ll continue working on it, but here’s the current state of the animation. Feel free to give a critique since it’s still a work in progress!

Life Updates | Catchup

I got my cup of tea and I’m ready to animate for the next couple hours! My day got split between research and job applications instead of what I wanted to achieve, animation. So a late night begins! I’ve got two more days to animate and sound design, but realistically only one full day. Tomorrow we have company so I don’t anticipate work after 1 pm. Therefore the bulk of animation gets to happen tonight and Thursday.

I haven’t done a life update in awhile, despite posting every night. These last couple weeks have just been crazy in my mind. Last week was more toned down but had a lot of follow up emailing as well as work. I spent a lot of time trying to get my bearings back after the intense networking week prior. Denver Startup Week tired me out! I also followed along the Adobe Youtube Live Sessions on Motion Design. They had amazing artists and I learned so much during those three days! Glad I got a chance to catch the sessions!

Monday, September 12, 2016, started with an early morning commute to Denver for a panel. The topic was Artist as an Entrepreneur. The three people there were very knowledgeable and had very interesting perspectives on presenting yourself as a business. I learned a ton. It was also great because space was small so I was able to meet two of the panelists. Following that, I ended up being an adult and going home to work.

Tuesday I had a lunch meeting with a client. That went well. That evening was a concert at the huge Pepsi Center. All American Rejects! Also, Blink182 and A Day to Remember. More importantly, Mike Kennerty liked my tweet. It should be known that I am a massive AAR fan. A great, fun concert, but tiring.

The following morning I did work. Then went down for Startup Week Denver. I went on a pedal-hopper tour which was interesting. We went to three different startups in a growing area of Denver. Made some new friends and then went to the Startup Week Career Fair. That was the biggest fair I’ve ever gone to. Three giant floors.

Thursday I commuted down in the middle of the week for, yet another, career fair. Then went straight home to work on my title sequence animation. This is when I discovered that they had extended the deadline. Celebrated with sleep.

Friday morning was Creative Mornings Denver. After that, I hung around for a couple hours waiting for my mother. Ended up at a parking meter photo shoot. It was Parking Day which is meant to represent taking back parking spaces. People set up a photo booth in a couple parking spaces. Lunch with mom and then home to relax for a bit. Then in the evening I went to Boulder Filmmaking Incubators for, more networking. It ended up being less networking and more critique group. Honestly, I was a little disappointed because the meetup group description made it sound more like a networking event. It was interesting watching the independent films, but I wish it had been more transparent about what the meetup actually was. It was a great and interesting critique session, but definitely not a networking event. The films screened were amazing and I learned quite a bit about the film process. If I end up at another one I’m interested in seeing progress on films shown and their process.

That concludes the crazy Denver Startup Week. This week has been hectic with job apps and emails. Hustling at all the projects. And now gotta get to that animation before I shower and sleep. Gonna be crazy tomorrow.

Night,
Kendall

Animatics | Title Sequence WIP

I’m still working on my sound design skills. I don’t ever expect to be a professional, but I would like to know enough to make my own videos work for me. As a result of being an utter newb, I spent a couple hours trying to find a song for my animatic because I didn’t like the original one I picked. I think the once I found is much better suited, not perfect since I can’t exactly commission one…But it’ll work for the contest entry.

Below is an animatic with music. Rebuilding all the assets is still being worked out and how all animation is going to be. Some of the timing still needs reworking, I feel like some of the titles go by quite fast, but I want to keep everything timed with the music beats still. I’m also finicky on use of red in that one frame, but it makes sense… I’ll figure out how I want to portray it when I get to that particular animation. Feel free to watch and tweet me some critiques!

Okay, gonna go watch Stranger Things again with the parents.

Title Sequence | WIP resume

Title sequence updates again! Most of my difficulties have lay within my lack of boards for the actual titles. Last week I had planned to just animate with shape layers well into the night, but after working these today I realize I should have had them done way earlier. Just thankful that the contest deadline got extended. I’m starting to wonder if I’d been able to finish at all. I think I would have done something, maybe not a great animation, but I would have finished. So thankful I have time to really hone and finesse this.

Below are the boards with text which is what I felt has been missing the last couple days. Animation resumes tomorrow. I plan on getting a better grasp of the timing and chronological order I want. Also I want to work on sound design since I have more time. Excited to get back into the groove of animating this!

Extended Deadlines are the Best

Good news, I can sleep tonight. After all that stress about making the deadline for the Pond5 Title Sequence contest this week they extended the contest till the 30th!!! I CAN SLEEP GUYS. SLEEEEEEEP. Which is important because I have a lot of networking opportunities tomorrow…after the 4 I’ve already done this week….so much follow up. I’m so tired, but having so much fun. Denver Startup Week is so amazing!

Since the contest is extended I halted my hasty animating. Now I can focus on making good animations and finessing, rather than rushing. Still going to hustle and get more animation done tonight, but now I can stop at a reasonable time like midnight. There’s no need for me to look and feel like my animation right now.

Here’s a short preview. Ignore the real cursor. If it wasn’t obvious I was prepared for a long night considering how tired I’ve been from Startup Week. Glad I can relax a little bit. Still got tons to do, but now I can have better animation!!!

process

Small Epiphanies | Title Sequence process

Nearly done with those vectors. I decided that I should just halt making more items for the grid and just move forward. I got my head that I should make this title sequence exactly the same as the original, but it’s suppose to inspired by it. I don’t need to make the entire 30 seconds. Especially since I’m working on the project alone, have other things to attend to, and only till Friday. There’s no way I will be even close to done animating if I follow it exactly. I don’t know why I got it in my head that I had to be. Now that I’ve realized that, I can speed up the process.

Since I’m changing it up I found some music and will be hunting some free sounds down to lay over it. I’m going to leave that till the end since it’s less important than just animating at this point. The plan is to just get as close to finished as possible and submit Thursday night. I didn’t accomplish the goals from yesterday, but now that I am stopping the grid concepts I can focus on the animations. I just wanted to finish making concepts for every single square, and now I’m realizing I could have moved on a long time ago. The more you learn.

Night friends,
Kendall

More Vectors & Monday Goals

Today was draining…got some vectoring done, but we had a memorial in the middle of the day so I felt pretty emotionally drained after that. I wasn’t expecting to get much done after it, but I’m still finding myself frustrated with how behind I am. Tomorrow will be busy, but excited to take on the crazy this week will offer!

I have plans to rise early and work work work until I have to go down to Denver. There’s a panel for Denver Startup Week in the middle of the day on Meow Wolf. Super excited to attend! I might bring my computer down with me so that I can get some work done after the fact, or get on a bus back right away…I have yet to decide. Goal is to have all vectors done, animation files prepped, at just one animated square. I got this. #tired
