Happy & Sad Dreams

Hey friends,

Sorry, this blog has been inactive the past month or so. I’ve been prioritizing other projects and IGOTAJOB.

Not saying what this job is at until I’ve finalized paperwork…mostly because my brain is still telling me that it’s not real even though I know it is. It probably won’t feel real until the first day of work which is coming up on March 13. In the meantime, I’m moving to New York City without a place to stay and lots of craziness as a result. Well, that’s not entirely true…I have family in Connecticut that is letting me crash there for a couple days while my dad and I go apartment searching. After that, the only plans are to make an Airbnb reservation for the rest of the month. I leave for the city this Sunday, March 6th. Life has gone from 5 mph to 100 mph what feels like overnight.

To say I’m excited is an understatement. I’m absolutely terrified too. But the good kind of terror. The kind of terror that you just are so excited to pursue that you’re running at a cliff full speed with only a very thin bungee cord and a very brief safety talk. I’m so unprepared but so ready to spring at this opportunity. Life is going to be insane for the next month and I will be updating this blog as much as possible.

I’m thinking about daily uploads here again. Ones that function similar to a journal so that I don’t forget all the little details and moments of the move and memories I’m about to make. I am so ignorant right now of all the business and movement New York City is going to hit me over the head with, but I’m so excited to try my best and live there.

In other news, a sad one, some of my childhood is leaving me. My favorite video store, The Video Station is closing. It hurts like hearing a friend has passed to know that my weekends will never again hear “Can you pick up _____ film/movie/tv show from the Video Station?”

It’s a relic that shaped my childhood, my dreams, inspiring me, and gave me a goal I didn’t realize I had. I want to design title sequences at some point during my art journey and the movie magic love comes from this place. I owe The Video Station for teaching me about stories. It’s a library of artistic moments that have shaped some of the stories I tell today. My dad said it sadly, “I will no longer look forward to Friday evenings.” It’s true. Every time I’ve left Boulder some of the things I miss most are watching videos and TV with the family, eating dinner, and going for walks with the pets and my mother. But crowding around the TV to watch a film my dad grabbed from The Video Station was always something I loved. Fresh popcorn (not that microwave kind), green apples, blankets with the lights low all huddled on the couch to anticipate the film found on the shelves of this place.

It’s sad to hear, not something unexpected, but sad. I’m sorry that it happened and some part of me wants to find a way to fight back, but I’m not sure how. How do you bring a video store back when everyone wants convenience? I’ll admit Netflix is easier to watch sometimes, but it’s never had all the titles I want to see. There’s no charming surprise of a title there, just algorithms that tell me what I’ve already seen in a different form. I’ll miss the recommendations and the charm of browsing, finding that story I didn’t know I wanted to watch.

To The Video Station, Thank you for giving me a foundation of stories to live by. Horse films that I rented out constantly, horror and sci-fi I couldn’t get instantly from Netflix, foreign films I’ve never heard of, and stories that bring me joy. Thank you for being here and I’ll miss you greatly, old friend.

A New Project

First off Happy Christmas! I’ll have another post later tonight with more holiday oriented stuff.

We switched the days we’re driving over to see family so I didn’t get to work on things as much as I wanted. Plus the painkillers only a lot me so much time before I fall asleep. Still getting work done, just trying to balance the time.

I’m starting on a new project. The goal is to turn this into a motion comic and have the first chapters up before 2017. This is a quick little introduction to some characters. I am still perfecting the illustration style since drawing humans isn’t my strong suit. The main one is a character called Emerson. Following that are her uncles, Romaros and Darvil.

I’ll be doing more sketches over the holiday. I’m certain that their face shapes will change a bit and the concept art will differ. I have a ton of ideas that I want to get out so there will be no shortage of art on the way. Goal is to sketch portrait a day in any medium. I might post it every day here, or just round up the sketches and do a dump at the end of the week. Depends on how many are done digitally. I also want to start animating some parts of the story so that will be an upcoming thing. Just a lot going on and of course holidays are in motion so getting time to illustrate is difficult.

Anyway, hope your Christmas Eve is wonderful and I’ll have something more tonight!

Lettering TASU

Finished making this today! I’m pleased with the lettering and design style. Different from what I usually make. I’m going have to refine this style and work on more projects like this! I’m heading to the airport in a bit to go pick up my brother. Excited to see him and his girlfriend. Will update you with more work tomorrow.

Xmas Gift Drawings

I drew a dog. Now I have to finish shading it and colorize before drawing another dog. Also started some other work for the holiday gifting. Just a lot of animation stuff to do as well as working on things for the Adobe Creative Residency. Starting on some of the projects related to the ideas I have. Also gotta get this blog in order. I haven’t decided if I want to continue posting in 2017. If I do then I need to organize the blog better, especially with all the art I create. I’ll let you know in the upcoming weeks what I decide.

Dino Updates & Planets

Imamakeathing. Worked on a class for Skillshare today. I decided to make a class on how to create a planet in photoshop. More updates on that later since will have to film and edit the short video classes together. You can see a quick example of what I’m aiming for below. Just a very simple class to learn basics of photoshop blend modes, brushes, masks, and filters.

I originally had the plan to do some lettering, but I didn’t feel comfortable teaching it because most lettering skills I’ve learned come from Skillshare. No need to over saturate the market when I can direct people to the classes I learned from. Plus, I feel this style is underrated and super easy to teach. I have a lot of photoshop knowledge so I want to teach what I know and understand. I’ve been using photoshop since my middle school days so it’ll be nice to teach some of the methods I’ve learned.

On another note, I have a silly animated dinosaur which I’m still debating is the right type of animation for the application I’m applying for. I don’t want to push the project longer than tomorrow so just whipping up quick animations styles. I love the tribal look but am iffy on the ‘rawr’ part. I don’t think I have enough time to test walk cycles out, but it’d be a fun challenge for the future. Colors still being picked and still deciding how to accurately put into the application without disrupting the flow. It’s relevant but I have to make sure the hierarchy is the right balance of animation skills and good responses for questions.

Excited for what tomorrow brings! I have to get some overdue lettering done for a friend, some reading, get the rebrand finalized, and finish a job application…all while still hanging with the fam. If it gets too hectic the reading might get thrown to the last moment. Hope not, I have a ton of library books I want to finish before they get returned! Night friends! Hope your days are productive!

Dinosaur

I drew a dinosaur. Mind you this is relevant for a job application…well partially relevant. I suppose I don’t actually need to be drawing it…but I want to. This is just a sketch, I got carried away with the drawing. Plan to simplify down the dinosaur into some shapes I can animate and do some more research on possible movements. For now enjoy this doodle. I will have a different version of it tomorrow or a different type of dino. Depends on time.

One more day of Inktober!

Can’t believe there’s only one more day of Inktober left! Gonna have to pick a fun one for ‘Friend’ tomorrow. It’s been a quick and crazy month. I feel like I just started the challenge yesterday. Not as long as my 365 Days of Lettering, but still a large project. I love these types of habit based challenges.

Speaking of habit based challenges, National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo) begins Tuesday! I’m spending Monday gearing up for writing. Will be updating you on the progress. Still on the fence about vlogging the process. If I decide to do so look for an announcement video tomorrow. Updates will be on here and Twitter regardless of vlogging. I’m determined to win this year and have supplementary drawings or animations to post. Very excited!

Gonna go get to bed so I can get some important tasks out of the way tomorrow!

I’m working on a few projects. Been distracted. Till then you’ll have all the Inktober drawings I’ve been creating.
