Why Brain, Why?

I woke up and drew a fantastic creation today. I am not sure why I thought it was going to be relevant for a rebranding. I’m really miffed at my morning idea. I remember looking at an amazing animation and being really excited to create something. Pulled out the Cintiq and opened Photoshop. And then drew a cat. Specifically my family cat, Zorro. Spent several hours refining the illustration and style that related to a motion graphic I have no script or plot for or idea for that matter, but I know it was meant for animating. I specifically used my own brand colors, including new ones I added as a part of the rebranding, and just went all in creating.

Somewhere around 3pm, I realized I don’t know why the drawing of the cat is relevant to ANYTHING. It’s not going into an animation, it’s not work related, it’s not a gift, nor is it supposedly for my website. But now I have an illustration of my cat. I really don’t know why I drew him. My brain decided it was a good idea at some point between 9 am and 10 am because I drew several ideations of him from 10am to 3pm. I am genuinely confused about why I did this and have spent the last few hours trying to find the connecting thought. How did I go from awesome mograph to website rebrand to drawing my cat?

From the general blasphemy of my mind, I present you with screenshots of what I created today. I’ll see if I can find a way to bring into my rebrand.

Inktober & Draplin

Looking for some better content to post tonight, but I’m getting too tired to create said content. I did find myself some good writing prompts for character building for NaNoWriMo. Working out the kinks of my main character currently.

Since I don’t have much else to show today here’s inktober and a photo from earlier today. I went down to see Aaron Draplin. It was awesome meeting him! Got a new book to read by him! I’m excited to get into it!

Sketches & Project Updates

Today is project and life updates time.

I’ve decided to ink the lettering, but that decision was just made 5 minutes ago so I have no updates for that project. The kickstarter failed so they’re going to launch a new one. I plan on waiting to release the fully inked project around that time so that I can promote it. As an offshoot of Creative Spaces TV, where I heard the Jeremy Cowart quote, I’m tempted to make some handlettering fan art…but I’m officially am back burnering that idea right now. I have Shiny Object Syndrome, thus, I have more important projects I must work on. Should I magically finish all the ones I have going on I will come back to that idea. I always want to do everything at once which results in getting nothing done at all. Must not fall into another burnout from overload of too many projects!

Below are a few quick sketches from my notebook for the title sequence project. I have plans tomorrow for a brainstorm with a friend so I can figure out more items. I need to get a move on this, falling behind according to my schedule. I need to start animating soon or I won’t finish on time!

Title Sequence Brainstorm

I’m using this blog as a brainstorming session for the title sequence project. Bare with my strange style for the moment. I have screenshots of Man Seeking Woman. In the captions I’m writing ideas of what I could illustrate in this section. It’s still general at this point, but I want a plan for the story it’s illustrating. It’ll help me come up with relevant ideas. I hopefully will be able to get some vectors started tomorrow night that go along with this theme.

Art Updates | Concepting

I obviously still have a ton of work to do for the concepting stage of the National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo) title credits, but I did start some illustrator sketches for the Man Seeking Woman style. You can see a few early concepts I have. I’m a little frustrated that I haven’t been able to get myself to work on these more. It’s not that I’m not excited, but I’ve been a bit out of sync working wise. I spent most of today cleaning my room since it’s been gathering cobwebs and dust.

Screen Shot 2016-08-31 at 11.30.06 PM

You know what I think it is? I think it’s the fact that I haven’t properly exercised in a week. I’ve been slacking. Will have to remedy that tomorrow and see if it helps.

Lettering update, I will be posting that to IG and twitter tomorrow. Maybe an early post here just so that you guys can see. I spent today outlining and sketching the letterforms again. Still tweaking, but will have it up on the social media soon!

I got distracted and worked on this piece while watching the Adobe Twitch channel. They were working on Fantasy Environments so I sketched this. A bit off topic from my original art projects, but better than no art at all!

Art Project Updates

I’ve decided to create NanoWriMo title credits. I’m leaning toward using the Broad City sequence, but I did start thinking about a way to use the Man Seeking Woman sequence. Both are great sequences to work with idea wise. I’ve read the interviews for both so I now can see the reasoning behind a lot of process and design choices. It’s a matter of how I want to challenge myself now, because both are challenging in their own rights. Broad City has cel animation, while Man Seeking Woman would be a lot of After Effects and Illustrator practice…either way I’d be excited to dive into both creations.

I think the matter now is to make styleframes for both ideas. From there I can decide which one is the stronger theme. I might even leave it up to you!

Aside from the title credit contest I’m working on, I am still working on the lettering of a Jeremy Cowart quote. I have plans to finalize the design tomorrow and post it since there’s a kickstarter going on for a unique and inspiring hotel he’s starting, and I want to make sure that it’s up before it closes! Even though I haven’t donated to it I would love to post a quote and promote it in the last days! I’m aiming for at least $1 toward that campaign…I should donate tomorrow before I forget.

Other updates are that I need to do a Bout of Books wrap up video. Honestly, I didn’t read. I picked up a couple of my books with the intention of reading but ended up just carrying them around everywhere I went rather than actually reading. So…yeah….at least I got some video practice. Still getting comfortable being on camera. Practice is practice.

I am editing the Ogallala video. I’m going to try to finish that by Friday so that it’s just out of the way. Also I’m taking too long on it. I know that I’m just procrastinating on it because of the terrible shakiness and trying to find that “perfect” music. Just need to get it done and stop procrastinating. I’m falling for “shiny object” projects rather than finishing the ones I’ve already started. Now that I think about it…I haven’t touched the video ideas I had back in January in a really long time…wow…I need to get that back on track. You know what…I just need to make myself content marketing calendar and schedule some dates. I’m just now realizing how far off track some of my projects are. I need to address  all my”shiny object” projects. It’s great that I have so many ideas and projects going on, but if I’m not actually finishing anything then…Need to go back and rethink my strategies a bit.

Yay…welcome to Kendall has a 2016 resolution realization. Welp, tomorrow is a new day and it’s time I go back through my goals and progress toward them to help figure out a schedule. I never gave myself proper and public deadlines so I didn’t stick to them. I’m remembering that Snackadoodle idea…why haven’t I continued that? Oops…I’m doing the shiny object thing again.

Okay guys, organizing time, here’s what I’m posting tomorrow. A schedule of all the projects I am currently working on and when they have to be officially posted, Jeremy Cowart Lettering, AND styleframes for NaNoWriMo Title Sequence. So look out for those two tomorrow. If I try to post animation inspiration or make up some dumb excuse as to why these 2 things are not done please tweet at me your disappointment. Nothing like failing on the internet to shame you into being more productive. I know I’ll be busy, but no excuses.

Night friends,
Kendall

Broad City & Title Credit Ideas

Pardon me for the lateness tonight, I decided to watch the Rio Closing Olympic Ceremonies with my mother. I hadn’t had a chance prior to this…although I still never saw the Opening Ceremonies for that matter. Absolutely beautiful designs and costumes. Had fun watching.

I am planning for one more day before I finalize a project for the Title Credits Contest. I’m debating another idea of using the Broad City credits and replacing it with NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month). It’d be fun. If I can’t decide on a title credit to mimic I might do that instead. I’m struggling because I have existing ideas for these book stories, and can’t seem to find title credits that feel similar creatively…or at least possible for my timeframe, skill level, and equipment. Additionally I’m tempted to wait until I finish reading the books I’ve been working on this past week. Just so I have more material to work with.

I did come to another idea for the titles…but I’m reluctant just because it’d be a huge pivot. It’d be turning my selfi animation into title credits… It seems perfect, but I’m feeling a little guilt in letting go of all the existing work. I don’t know…I almost want to make two different animations now. The one I’ve been working on and then a title sequence… The question is if I want to enter that into the contest? or just make my own entirely? If anyone has any thoughts on this let me know…

I put the Broad City credits below so you can see the fun energetic feeling they have. If I take that route it’d be easy to recreate for NaNoWriMo. It also adheres to the creative kooky brand NaNo writes in. So lots of potential. Also promotion for my favorite nonprofit. If you have time I also recommend reading through the title process on Art of the Title. It’s interesting to see how the ideas come about and how they transform.

Updates & Animation Inspiration 78

Update to the previous post on the recreate a title sequence contest. For the title sequence I’m going to focus on the book choice since that will determine the mood. From there I can try to find a 2D sequence that I can mimic which fits that same mood. I probably should have done that earlier today, but instead I went down the rabbit hole that is Art of the Title. Too many title sequences in my head now.

Bootcamp is also done. I didn’t quite finish the character throwing the ball like I wanted to today. Combination of lack of willpower and complicated tweening process turned into me getting only partially through the tween. Really love keyframes, really hate tweens. Character Animation is hard. It sounds stupid to say that, but it’s just hard. Seriously even though I’m not finished with the course (I can still complete the rest of the lessons just no more critique time) I’ve learned so much! It’s crazy seeing how much School of Motion has kicked my ass and changed my animation skills. I’ll try to have an updated reel for you guys to see soon. Just taking my time trying to really learn that art of animation first. Love you SoM. ❤

Since I haven’t progressed far on the title sequence contest, nor finished all the bootcamp stuff I’m throwing up some inspiration. Depending on how crazy my weekend is I might have another update for these projects, but I’m trying to spend some time reading too. I haven’t gotten too far in my Bout of Books goals. Just want to finish at least one book by Sunday. Which is doable if I actually sit down to read.

Night,
Kendall

Rocklets + Mogul | By Zublime

This is like a completely animated Skittles commercial, but better because it’s animated.

Madita | By Animography

I love Animography! They always have fun fonts to watch animate. This one is great because the promotion has such a strong story to it. Beautiful transitions and sound design. If you don’t know about Animography, they create animated typefaces which you can purchase and use. I recommend checking them out even if you can’t buy, because they’re super fun and great for inspiration! There are a couple free types you can download. Love this!

Bout of Books Read-a-Thon & Animation Updates 3

Today I filmed a quick To-Be-Read video for Bout of Books 17. I am currently reading The Walls Around Us by Nova Ren Suma. It’s interesting and passing the time as my video renders. You can watch the TBR down below if you want. Since I am updating here as well as Twitter & Youtube I’ll post their blurb below. For most current updates Twitter will be the best, but if time allows I will vlog.

The Bout of Books read-a-thon is organized by Amanda @ On a Book Bender and Kelly @ Reading the Paranormal. It is a week long read-a-thon that begins 12:01am Monday, August 22nd and runs through Sunday, August 28th in whatever time zone you are in. Bout of Books is low-pressure. There are challenges, giveaways, and a grand prize, but all of these are completely optional. For all Bout of Books 17 information and updates, be sure to visit the Bout of Books blog. – From the Bout of Books team

Animation bootcamp is going well, still behind and only have till Friday, but progress is progress. I’m aiming for at least one more project done before the critique closes. I think that’s reasonable considering I have an eye appointment on Wednesday. I never get any reading or video stuff done while my eyes are dilated. I am still delaying the Ogallala video because of edit time. Lack of tripod really makes everything difficult. Also I need to plan videos out a bit more. Editing the TBR video went very quick because I had a plan and idea for the structure…but the camping video not so much. Learning on the go.

Goals this week is get the bootcamp as close to finished as possible, and start animating my selfi animation. That has been sitting on the back burner for way too long, and I could benefit from actually finishing one of my personal animations. I just came up with another idea for an animation, so I’ll be adding that to my list of eventual short animated films to make. I really love coming up with these ideas, but starting to get too many!

This concludes my Monday Life updates. TBR is below for viewing. Talk to you guys soon!

Baseball and Animation Inspiration 76

I feel gross after sitting in hot HOT sun for 5 hours at the Rockies vs Cubs game today. Was kind of fun…except for frying like an egg in a pan. I seriously have new tan marks just from today’s exposure. I’m pretty sure my makeup is the wrong tone now. Yay sun. So much sweat. I am a little bummed that the Cubs lost… Still a fun outing hanging out with the fam, but bummed.

The hot sun evaporated most of my energy today, thus, I didn’t make any headway on projects. Plans are a good night’s sleep and early morning exercise so I can get all the stuff I need to get done, done. To make this blog post not boring inspiration time!

Bearband | By August Håkansson

Why is this not a website? I want this to be interactive so the bears can play with each instrument and be controlled by various clicks. If not a web based interface, at least a kid’s computer game. It’s very bright and colorful with fun animations. Really wanted to interact with the piece!

I Like to Play | By Josep Bernaus

Great exercise that plays with different elements to make a dynamic and engaging piece. I love watching the interaction with all the exercises. Really fun idea and great way to add personality to inanimate objects. Perfect idea to use for practice.
