LitCon 2017 |Where Fiction Meets Real

caesar2

babelfishHello, I’m your host Caesar Flickerman!

Now if you haven’t yet, please open your swag bag where you will find a small glass with a yellow Babel Fish provided by The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy. Please put the fish in your ear for translating. This will allow you to communicate will all the literary characters today as well as the authors.

Welcome to the first LitCon! LitCon is a new event connecting readers, authors, and fictional literary characters. We have a great portal system to bring everyone through so we can enjoy our time discussing our fictional universes and create friendships. Thank you for all attending LitCon! I want to give a shoutout to Eventbrite for all their help in planning this conference! Without their help, we would not be sitting here talking. I also want to thank Hogwarts for everything. Jo, Ms. Rowling, has been very gracious in talking with that magical world to help pull strings to create those realm portals. They are amazing hosts and I can’t thank you enough for helping us put LitCon on!

Now if you all were looking at your schedules this conference spans two days but is suspended in time. We worked with some lovely people from the Wizarding World of Harry Potter to create this little bubble for everyone to participate. Thank you to Hogwarts for hosting us on these days. The Room of Requirement has a great space for our conference.

Thank you for all attending our panels today. The schedule is in the swag bag if you need a refresher after this. We will be momentarily starting off with our first panel Landscapes & Cityscapes: World Building and Living Practically at 8:30 AM. If you’re looking for the time the Room of Requirement has a giant clock over to your left to look at. Following that, we have a great panel about Literary Dishes: Descriptions in Appetites at 10:15 till lunch at noon. We will have some dishes at the end which the House Elves insisted on preparing. If you have any allergies or issues regarding that please let me or the volunteer staff know. Speaking of which can we please give them a big applause for helping us out!

Following lunch at 13:30 we will have a lovely discussion in a roundtable about Growing Up Literary: Characters & Authors. I should not have favorites but I’m really excited about it! Our following panel is Transportation in Your Fiction: The Realities of Travel at 3:15. At 4:45 we will have a break for dinner and at 6:30 our keynote speaker, Ransom Riggs, the author of Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children will be talking. After we will have a quick statement about tomorrow’s events and then we can turn in or play games and discuss. Many of the fictional characters and authors have provided alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverage samples from fictional worlds to test.

I’m so glad you could all make it and look forward to talking to many of you as the days progress. As a reminder, the volunteer staff of LitCon are all here for you and if you need any help please don’t hesitate to let us know. Thank you for your participation and a big thank you to the speakers, for giving your time. Now presenting LitCon 2017!

Hope you enjoyed reading this! I had fun designing and coming up with an idea for the concept. It’s a little different from what I usually do, but a step toward many projects I want to accomplish during the 2017 year. Had fun animating the fish and illustrating Caesar Flickerman in the colors I picked for the theme of this fictional conference.

If they are questions around this silly post let me know! I, of course, have been coming up with more random ideas related to events in LitCon. I hope you enjoyed this and more posts coming soon!

Happy reading friends!
~Kendall H.

Sidenote: I do not own any of these characters. This is intended for fun and I did not get paid for any content. The writing and drawing in here are my own, but all characters are copyrighted to their authors. All for fun!

Art Updates

Got some good art projects on the way. Been trying to get as much done as possible during the day, but gotta do some other work and family time too. Here’s a little preview of an upcoming project I’ve been working on for the last couple days. Got a lot to work on. The lettering styles don’t match as well when transferred from hand drawn to digitally illustrated. I spent awhile vectoring it only to scrap that whole lead because it didn’t fit the style I want. I have to add the last words in the quote which are ‘I am one’ and design the illustration. It’s from the book The Abyss Surrounds Us by Emily Skrutskie. She asked me to do this since I had a few lazy days of waking up after 9 AM. It’s technically punishment for waking up late, but I always have fun working on these so maybe I should sleep in more.

I hope to have a finished version done by the end of the weekend, but no promises since I have so different projects to do! I always get so busy working on gifts during the holiday season. Not to mention that now I’ve been asked to learn Sketch for UI/UX design work. It’s not hard but it’s a different workflow from Adobe products so the key commands are going to take some getting use to. I just finished listening to the Animalators episode with John Schlemmer the Motion Lead at Google. I’m fascinated by the idea of incorporating motion into UI. I’m going to read through the Material Design Motion guidelines for some extra homework. I’m really interested in how all of that works. Who knows maybe it’ll get me a job at Google? Probably not, but I’m interested in reading that nonetheless.

Here’s a quick update on that dog Xmas gift I’m working on. Not satisfied with the coloring style, might return to that black and white version but clean it up. It could be a case of more detail too. I’m in that middle area of not sketchy nor polished enough.

That does it for the art updates of the day. I will be working on lots tomorrow so tune in for the rest of the work and final versions!

Why Brain, Why?

I woke up and drew a fantastic creation today. I am not sure why I thought it was going to be relevant for a rebranding. I’m really miffed at my morning idea. I remember looking at an amazing animation and being really excited to create something. Pulled out the Cintiq and opened Photoshop. And then drew a cat. Specifically my family cat, Zorro. Spent several hours refining the illustration and style that related to a motion graphic I have no script or plot for or idea for that matter, but I know it was meant for animating. I specifically used my own brand colors, including new ones I added as a part of the rebranding, and just went all in creating.

Somewhere around 3pm, I realized I don’t know why the drawing of the cat is relevant to ANYTHING. It’s not going into an animation, it’s not work related, it’s not a gift, nor is it supposedly for my website. But now I have an illustration of my cat. I really don’t know why I drew him. My brain decided it was a good idea at some point between 9 am and 10 am because I drew several ideations of him from 10am to 3pm. I am genuinely confused about why I did this and have spent the last few hours trying to find the connecting thought. How did I go from awesome mograph to website rebrand to drawing my cat?

From the general blasphemy of my mind, I present you with screenshots of what I created today. I’ll see if I can find a way to bring into my rebrand.

Inktober Orangutan

Illustration of an Orangutan tonight for Inktober. I promise more content other than reposting my inktober illustrations  will start again. I’m preparing for NaNo WriMo so some content from that project will start appearing. I’m determined to win this year and would love to share illustrations and brainstorming content with you via this blog during next month. I’m debating about

I’m preparing for NaNo WriMo so some content from that upcoming project will start appearing. I’m determined to win this year and would love to share illustrations and brainstorming content with you during the month. I’m debating about vlogging the event, but I don’t want to take too much time away from writing for video editing, so still on the fence about it. Also unsure how entertaining that would be. Maybe just a weekly vlog update? Film every day but only post updates on Saturdays or Sundays might be the solution. I’ll leave that musing for another day.

Will update you as decisions get made. Thanks for reading!

Inktober Day 7 & Animation Inspiration 93

Inktober today left me a little heartbroken. So many extinct animals. -cry-  There’s also Animation Inspiration since I haven’t done much else art wise on here for the last week.

Flip Flop Logo Reveal | By Tenggrenska

Loving the liquid transitions and the sound design in this mograph. Simple and fun piece!

CutOut Fest 2016 – Teasers I & II | By Le Cube

These are quite possibly my favorite teasers EVER. Seriously left me wanting a whole short animation and more. So disappointed that these have endings. I’m at that point where I might download these and save to my computer so I can watch them even when I don’t have wifi. Just these graphics and animation styles…holy…

Animation Inspiration 84

Ehhh…still recovering from the craziness of this past week. I’m need some more recharging time before I jump back into animating my title sequence. More inspiration friends. If I don’t get any work done tomorrow def will have stuff on Monday.

Pokemon Generations Episode 1: The Adventure

Loving this cute animation of Pokemon Generations. Can’t wait to see more!

Vancity – Credit Card Financial Literacy | By Matt J

This has such a great animation style! I love the way the animator handles the control of your eye, especially where there is a lot of things to looks at. It’s got great pacing and a good narration to help illustrate their point. Love the illustration style and colors so much!

Updates & Animation Inspiration 78

Update to the previous post on the recreate a title sequence contest. For the title sequence I’m going to focus on the book choice since that will determine the mood. From there I can try to find a 2D sequence that I can mimic which fits that same mood. I probably should have done that earlier today, but instead I went down the rabbit hole that is Art of the Title. Too many title sequences in my head now.

Bootcamp is also done. I didn’t quite finish the character throwing the ball like I wanted to today. Combination of lack of willpower and complicated tweening process turned into me getting only partially through the tween. Really love keyframes, really hate tweens. Character Animation is hard. It sounds stupid to say that, but it’s just hard. Seriously even though I’m not finished with the course (I can still complete the rest of the lessons just no more critique time) I’ve learned so much! It’s crazy seeing how much School of Motion has kicked my ass and changed my animation skills. I’ll try to have an updated reel for you guys to see soon. Just taking my time trying to really learn that art of animation first. Love you SoM. ❤

Since I haven’t progressed far on the title sequence contest, nor finished all the bootcamp stuff I’m throwing up some inspiration. Depending on how crazy my weekend is I might have another update for these projects, but I’m trying to spend some time reading too. I haven’t gotten too far in my Bout of Books goals. Just want to finish at least one book by Sunday. Which is doable if I actually sit down to read.

Night,
Kendall

Rocklets + Mogul | By Zublime

This is like a completely animated Skittles commercial, but better because it’s animated.

Madita | By Animography

I love Animography! They always have fun fonts to watch animate. This one is great because the promotion has such a strong story to it. Beautiful transitions and sound design. If you don’t know about Animography, they create animated typefaces which you can purchase and use. I recommend checking them out even if you can’t buy, because they’re super fun and great for inspiration! There are a couple free types you can download. Love this!

Animation Inspiration 77 | Google Doodle

I saw the lovely Google Doodle this evening and want to share it with you, that is if you haven’t seen it already!

I love looking up who creates the doodles and all of the other artwork they make. The two main ladies for this one are Sophie Diao and Lydia Nichols. There are of course others that worked on it which you can find here. You can also read a bit about the process at that link. I love the animated GIF they have there showing how the patches were created.

I recommend looking at Sophie Diao’s website to see some of the other doodles she’s created and her fun illustration style. http://www.sophiediao.com/

I also love Lydia Nichols’ illustrations and doodles which you can view on her site: http://www.lydianichols.com/

I’m sure everyone checks out the doodles, but don’t forget to look at others from different countries! There’s so many that you can’t see on the homepage because the doodles are targeted. Take a bit of time to scroll through the Doodle site to see all of Google’s Doodles!

Also check out Google 4 Doodle, a contest for kids to enter their own doodles. It’s really fun to see what kids create. It’s fantastic that Google features their artistic abilities. I shared an Animation Inspiration featuring the Google 4 Doodle video a couple weeks ago, you can check that out here. If you know a kid K-12 that likes to draw try to get them to join in on the fun! Even if they don’t enter the Google 4 Doodle contest at least they’ll have fun drawing.

Hope everyone has a great night!

Baseball and Animation Inspiration 76

I feel gross after sitting in hot HOT sun for 5 hours at the Rockies vs Cubs game today. Was kind of fun…except for frying like an egg in a pan. I seriously have new tan marks just from today’s exposure. I’m pretty sure my makeup is the wrong tone now. Yay sun. So much sweat. I am a little bummed that the Cubs lost… Still a fun outing hanging out with the fam, but bummed.

The hot sun evaporated most of my energy today, thus, I didn’t make any headway on projects. Plans are a good night’s sleep and early morning exercise so I can get all the stuff I need to get done, done. To make this blog post not boring inspiration time!

Bearband | By August Håkansson

Why is this not a website? I want this to be interactive so the bears can play with each instrument and be controlled by various clicks. If not a web based interface, at least a kid’s computer game. It’s very bright and colorful with fun animations. Really wanted to interact with the piece!

I Like to Play | By Josep Bernaus

Great exercise that plays with different elements to make a dynamic and engaging piece. I love watching the interaction with all the exercises. Really fun idea and great way to add personality to inanimate objects. Perfect idea to use for practice.
