Happy & Sad Dreams

Hey friends,

Sorry, this blog has been inactive the past month or so. I’ve been prioritizing other projects and IGOTAJOB.

Not saying what this job is at until I’ve finalized paperwork…mostly because my brain is still telling me that it’s not real even though I know it is. It probably won’t feel real until the first day of work which is coming up on March 13. In the meantime, I’m moving to New York City without a place to stay and lots of craziness as a result. Well, that’s not entirely true…I have family in Connecticut that is letting me crash there for a couple days while my dad and I go apartment searching. After that, the only plans are to make an Airbnb reservation for the rest of the month. I leave for the city this Sunday, March 6th. Life has gone from 5 mph to 100 mph what feels like overnight.

To say I’m excited is an understatement. I’m absolutely terrified too. But the good kind of terror. The kind of terror that you just are so excited to pursue that you’re running at a cliff full speed with only a very thin bungee cord and a very brief safety talk. I’m so unprepared but so ready to spring at this opportunity. Life is going to be insane for the next month and I will be updating this blog as much as possible.

I’m thinking about daily uploads here again. Ones that function similar to a journal so that I don’t forget all the little details and moments of the move and memories I’m about to make. I am so ignorant right now of all the business and movement New York City is going to hit me over the head with, but I’m so excited to try my best and live there.

In other news, a sad one, some of my childhood is leaving me. My favorite video store, The Video Station is closing. It hurts like hearing a friend has passed to know that my weekends will never again hear “Can you pick up _____ film/movie/tv show from the Video Station?”

It’s a relic that shaped my childhood, my dreams, inspiring me, and gave me a goal I didn’t realize I had. I want to design title sequences at some point during my art journey and the movie magic love comes from this place. I owe The Video Station for teaching me about stories. It’s a library of artistic moments that have shaped some of the stories I tell today. My dad said it sadly, “I will no longer look forward to Friday evenings.” It’s true. Every time I’ve left Boulder some of the things I miss most are watching videos and TV with the family, eating dinner, and going for walks with the pets and my mother. But crowding around the TV to watch a film my dad grabbed from The Video Station was always something I loved. Fresh popcorn (not that microwave kind), green apples, blankets with the lights low all huddled on the couch to anticipate the film found on the shelves of this place.

It’s sad to hear, not something unexpected, but sad. I’m sorry that it happened and some part of me wants to find a way to fight back, but I’m not sure how. How do you bring a video store back when everyone wants convenience? I’ll admit Netflix is easier to watch sometimes, but it’s never had all the titles I want to see. There’s no charming surprise of a title there, just algorithms that tell me what I’ve already seen in a different form. I’ll miss the recommendations and the charm of browsing, finding that story I didn’t know I wanted to watch.

To The Video Station, Thank you for giving me a foundation of stories to live by. Horse films that I rented out constantly, horror and sci-fi I couldn’t get instantly from Netflix, foreign films I’ve never heard of, and stories that bring me joy. Thank you for being here and I’ll miss you greatly, old friend.

Lettering Wednesdays

*Technically it’s Thursday since I’m posting this before going to bed and it’s after midnight, I’ll try to post earlier in the future.

I’m not finished with this lettering piece but I thought I’d screencap the drafts I’m working on for you. It’s a nice bit of process while I figure out word hierarchy. It’s a quote I feel is quite relevant these days and an important issue.

A patriot must always be ready to defend his country against his government.

Will have a post on Friday with some fun illustrations. I was hoping I’d get a reply from someone before posting it, but it doesn’t seem likely so I’m just going to post it on Friday. Excited to share that with you, it’s a fun creative piece that I spent a lot of time working on.

Happy arting friends!

Lettering TASU

Finished making this today! I’m pleased with the lettering and design style. Different from what I usually make. I’m going have to refine this style and work on more projects like this! I’m heading to the airport in a bit to go pick up my brother. Excited to see him and his girlfriend. Will update you with more work tomorrow.

Art Updates

Got some good art projects on the way. Been trying to get as much done as possible during the day, but gotta do some other work and family time too. Here’s a little preview of an upcoming project I’ve been working on for the last couple days. Got a lot to work on. The lettering styles don’t match as well when transferred from hand drawn to digitally illustrated. I spent awhile vectoring it only to scrap that whole lead because it didn’t fit the style I want. I have to add the last words in the quote which are ‘I am one’ and design the illustration. It’s from the book The Abyss Surrounds Us by Emily Skrutskie. She asked me to do this since I had a few lazy days of waking up after 9 AM. It’s technically punishment for waking up late, but I always have fun working on these so maybe I should sleep in more.

I hope to have a finished version done by the end of the weekend, but no promises since I have so different projects to do! I always get so busy working on gifts during the holiday season. Not to mention that now I’ve been asked to learn Sketch for UI/UX design work. It’s not hard but it’s a different workflow from Adobe products so the key commands are going to take some getting use to. I just finished listening to the Animalators episode with John Schlemmer the Motion Lead at Google. I’m fascinated by the idea of incorporating motion into UI. I’m going to read through the Material Design Motion guidelines for some extra homework. I’m really interested in how all of that works. Who knows maybe it’ll get me a job at Google? Probably not, but I’m interested in reading that nonetheless.

Here’s a quick update on that dog Xmas gift I’m working on. Not satisfied with the coloring style, might return to that black and white version but clean it up. It could be a case of more detail too. I’m in that middle area of not sketchy nor polished enough.

That does it for the art updates of the day. I will be working on lots tomorrow so tune in for the rest of the work and final versions!

Sketches & Project Updates

Today is project and life updates time.

I’ve decided to ink the lettering, but that decision was just made 5 minutes ago so I have no updates for that project. The kickstarter failed so they’re going to launch a new one. I plan on waiting to release the fully inked project around that time so that I can promote it. As an offshoot of Creative Spaces TV, where I heard the Jeremy Cowart quote, I’m tempted to make some handlettering fan art…but I’m officially am back burnering that idea right now. I have Shiny Object Syndrome, thus, I have more important projects I must work on. Should I magically finish all the ones I have going on I will come back to that idea. I always want to do everything at once which results in getting nothing done at all. Must not fall into another burnout from overload of too many projects!

Below are a few quick sketches from my notebook for the title sequence project. I have plans tomorrow for a brainstorm with a friend so I can figure out more items. I need to get a move on this, falling behind according to my schedule. I need to start animating soon or I won’t finish on time!

Lettering Process

Here’s quick process shot of my lettering project so far. I’m done with the finalization of the layout and sketches, but indecisive if I want to go back to ink it. It looks fine in graphite, but I did it all on graph paper…so the photoshop edits have been difficult. Hence why not finished. I’ll update you tomorrow, but probably going to push the actual finalizing till Tuesday or Wednesday.

I’m leaving on a quick weekend visit the grandmother trip. That means 5 hours in a car tomorrow and on Monday when we drive back. I don’t have the greatest of surfaces to work on while there so if I decide to ink, I will hold off. Just because I want a lot of desk space and quiet concentration time. Family trips tend to be constant interruptions. Very disruptive when trying to ink and not make wobbly lines.

Since, I don’t have deskspace I plan on using all downtime possible to work on the title sequence. I’m leaning toward the Man Seeking Woman title sequence just because of the challenge it entails, but I have keep in mind that I don’t have a lot of time left. It might be more fun and interesting, however I have a tendency to overestimate my abilities thus bad estimates of the time it takes to finish. Aiming for all assets for sequence to be finished by Monday night so that I can spend as much time animating as possible.

Now I got to go pack, so night friends.

The Purpose Hotel

I am not done with my lettering, more on that later. First off, I want to take the next portion of this post to promote The Purpose Hotel. Jeremy Cowart, the person who’s quote I’m lettering, has a kickstarter which ends tomorrow [Sept 2nd]. The concept of this hotel is that every part of it helps contribute to changing the world. By sleeping there you sponsor a child through the room. If you want faster internet that fee helps combat human trafficking. Each item used helps a someone out in some way and makes some kind of difference in this world. It’s an amazing concept and I hope you will contribute! I don’t have a lot to give money wise so I donated $10. Giving up a couple coffees from Starbucks. There is a $1 option if you really can’t donate much. This project is awesome and I hope that I get to stay in the hotel one day! Please check it out! The Kickstarter is here and you can watch the video below for more details.

Lettering wise I started typing out this post with initial frustration and anger at myself for not being done with my it, but decided it’s not going to do any good. Why dwell on being angry at myself for not being done? Doesn’t change the progress on my lettering. If anything it set me back because I’m spending time focused on being angry at myself instead of actually finishing the product. I know for future reference that if I want a finished lettering product to allow more time for ideas and sketching. At least if I want to have that to a certain caliber that is…I’m trying not to be a perfectionist, but I still want to take my time with the project.

I just realized I forgot something important with both the lettering project and title sequence. I forgot fun. No wonder I’m getting nothing done. I’ve spent the entire week just annoyed at myself rather than enjoying the work. Pffffffffttttttt…I always get the most done when I’m excited and having fun with the project. Obviously not all projects come with butterflies, sunshine, and rainbows, but these are personal projects that are suppose to be enjoyable. I will have to remedy this.

Tomorrow I’m going to have fun and play with these projects. I make zero promises as to where I’ll be progress wise, but I do hope I’m finished lettering since I want to promote that hotel before the kickstarter closes. Got to go to bed early so that I can wake up and draw! 😀

Lettering Sketches

-yawn- I’m a bit tired from a long day. I didn’t make too much today. I’m sharing my few sketches for a lettering I’ve been working on the past week. I’m hoping to finish it this week. I’m devoting a large portion of tomorrow to sketches and decisions for the title sequence contest. Updates on that tomorrow.

Night,
Kendall
