Day 18 of 365

Mylard stared around at the spaceship’s control center. Tomkin found herself floating upward a moment later. The girls made eye contact, nodded and began looking for the box again.

Valrose was narrating as the two searched. “Looks like they’ve discovered that the box transforms their surroundings! I’m excited to see who’s going to win though! What they don’t know is that there’s always something dangerous lurking in each of these worlds! The more times they go through the spaces the more dangerous the threats are! Now, of course, the question is how do these girls get out of this? We’ll have to find out!”

Mylard spotted something that looked like the box for a moment but upon floating closer realized it was a little portable screen. She grabbed it and turned it on. The screen flickered to life showing a security camera of the spaceship. She swiped through the screen seeing herself and Tomkin floating and a large figure in the corner–wait–she looked up just as the figure attacked her.

Mylard found herself thrown against the controls, sparks flying as she hit them. Tomkin startled saw a dark figure she couldn’t quite piece together what it was, but it came at her. She propelled herself away and into a hallway. Her heart hammering as she aimed to get away. Just as she left the room a loud alarm sounded.

WARNING. OXYGEN SYSTEMS HAVE BEEN TURNED OFF. PLEASE TURN ON MANUALLY FROM THE CONTROL CENTER OR THE ENGINE ROOM. THERE IS 98% OXYGEN REMAINING. WARNING… the message repeated.

Tomkin froze as she heard it and found herself floating a little far to the left, she hit the metal of the spaceship hard. She winced and looked up. The figure was still coming at her. It moved fluidly and terrifyingly for her as if about to consume her whole.

Mylard floated aimlessly for a few moments in shock as the stinging burns from hitting the controls pained her. She jolted suddenly as she remembered what was going on. She twisted around reminding herself that she should look for the box.

Day 14 of 365

Mylard found another dead end. Her frown was starting to droop and she wanted to cry. It’d been nearly half an hour of circles and she felt so confused. She took a deep breath and turned away from the dead end. She tensed hearing a scream which meant that one of her opponents was enduring something horrible. She hoped it wouldn’t be too painful, but was doubtful hearing the screaming. A moment later the intense yelling ended and the maze returned to its silence. Mylard had stopped moving during the yelling.

Taking another deep breath the young woman started again. She was remembering the last thing her sister had said to her. Just do your best Mylard. We know you’ll make everyone proud. She reminded herself of how much an honor this was and how grateful she was to be entered. It didn’t feel great to be in this terrifying maze, but the riches and honor would be worth it. She just wanted to do right by her older sister.

Turning a corner Mylard was surprised to see a clearing an in the center the glowing light of the ring. It was on a blue table and raised up. She froze taking in the sight. The rules were clear. Get the ring and place it on your finger to win. Mylard took a small step towards it, paused and searched. She wondered what would be on her way to get it. In every episode of the game, she had watched there was always something that prevented the last pair girls from getting to the ring.

Seeing nothing obvious she clutched the stun gun closer and inched carefully toward the ring. She felt like she was getting too close as she kept stepping toward it. Just as she reached the first step Tomkin appeared. Her orange hair was tangled and several scratch marks were bleeding down her stomach and arms. She looked around wildly wondering how she’d gotten to the clearing.

Mylard ran up the stairs hoping that it wouldn’t be a mistake. It was. The first step disappeared from her and Mylard found herself falling into someplace dark. She landed hard on a flat surface. Lamps flashed around her in a blinding manner and a high pitched noise filled her ears. But the thing that confused her was the stench. It was horrific and she couldn’t even describe it, but it made her want to vomit.

Valrose delighted that they had reached the clearing announced, “We’re in the final stage Ringers! Shall we see who gets to the ring first? There’s a poll up and running, tap your screen to tell us who you think will win! Mylard a regular girl who just somehow by chance got here, OR Tomkin, the legacy who has to live up to the pressure of two winning women!”

Tomkin froze seeing Mylard suddenly disappear. She had been there one second and then the next she wasn’t. She looked around wondering if the panther would follow her into this clearing. She didn’t want to make the same mistake as Mylard so she skipped the first step. The second one was solid. Breathing a sigh of relief she started toward the third but found her feet glued. Tomkin jerked at them but they were firm. Confused she looked down trying to–suddenly she was falling into the abyss.

Tomkin fell hard on top of Mylard who had barely stood up before being knocked back down. The wind knocked out of both girls and all senses being confused, made everything harder. They groaned and yelled trying to find themselves in the dark.

“OW! GET OFF!” Mylard yelled pushing Tomkin hard. Tomkin found herself suddenly hitting a wall. She yelped as one of her deep scratches got pressed by something.

It became apparent that both girls were in a tiny room of some making. Their senses were meant to be entirely overwhelmed by the experience. Tomkin closed her eyes and pulled her sunglasses down. It helped a little with the light. She turned around trying to understand what was going on.

Day 4 of 365

Made some good plotting points yesterday, threw half of them out the window for random inspiration. Still following this story.

Part One
Part Two
Part Three

There was a large man standing at the back door holding an alien weapon. The Sandburg aliens tensed up and Mr. Sandburg lifted the gun he held. The man had a large scar on his face and several tattoos that were hard to distinguish on his arms.

Marilyn was the first to speak. “Verona. You found us.”

Verona smirked. “Been a long time coming. What do you go by these days? I haven’t seen you lot since you were rats running.”

“These bodies are Sandburgs,” Fell responded. He was leaning forward in his chair watching Verona. The air was full of a nervous energy.

“You gonna kill us?” Diana snapped. Her eyes darted around the room at the gun Mr. Sandburg had pointing at Verona and alien weapon in his hand.

“Depends. Got anything redeemable? I heard a ship is gonna touch down in the next hour or so. Its drop point isn’t far from here. I wanna trade for some freedom,” he said.

Ellis tried to follow the conversation but found himself in silence and in confusion. He wanted to ask so many questions but the hostility made him feel nervous.

“Even if we had something we wouldn’t give it to you,” Mr. Sandburg said. He wanted to kill Verona, but Marilyn kept giving him looks.

It’s been Awhile

It’s been awhile.

I took a little break from publishing posts here after the hustle of posting all the time last year. Last time I picked three words for the year: Make, Move, & Empower. I still plan to give this blog better organization and a layout update. I’ve been hustling at some other projects. One of the reasons why I didn’t want to have a daily habit this year is that it prioritizes quantity over quality. The exception to this is my drawing habit because I really want to improve at drawing humans and animals. I’m replacing most of my daily habits with larger scale and longer projects. They are now weekly based rather than daily allowing for me to give attention to detail and improve the quality.

Additionally, with the upcoming blog layout update, I want to change the theme of this blog. It’s not going far off from 2016. I started this with the intention of improving my storytelling ability, but it became an art blog. I posted more artistic process and inspirational pieces than stories last year. I don’t remember if I officially declared the shift in focus during 2016, but I am for 2017. More quality content will be heading your way as a result. I have a few articles that I didn’t get to during 2016 that I’ll have up next week and then I’m planning out a content calendar.

Plans are to update Monday & Fridays. Mondays I’ll leave as more fun and informative art posts while Fridays are inspiration and freebies for myself. Additionally, follow me on Twitter for full updates on other projects. I’m plunging into the illustration world by creating a motion comic based on a story I’ve had in my head for what feels like forever! It’s the same one that I’ve tried to write for NaNoWriMo. If anyone followed through the year and remembers me drawing random character designs or my character’s house, that’s the same story. I decided to take it on in a new medium. That gets updated every Tuesday & Thursday. Wednesdays are lettering days. I’m leaving weekends free for fun!

Schedule:

Mondays & Fridays: Blog Post Here!
Tuesdays & Thursdays: Motion Comic over on Tumblr!
Wednesday: Lettering! Here

Once again, check out my twitter if you want to see any updates and a bunch of figure drawing art I’ve been practicing! My Instagram also gets the occasional update or throwback art.

Thanks for reading! Updates soon!

Animation Inspiration 96

NaNoWriMo started. I nixed the vlog idea because I don’t need to have another task on my to-do list right now. Maybe next year. Also behind already. Spent a large portion of today reworking an ‘about me’ and writing blurbs on my website. It’s going well, but I found myself distracted by everything sometime around 3 pm. It’s been a bumpy ride since then. Goals are to get on track with wordcount tomorrow and launch my new site design.

It’s weird not having an inktober project to work on. I’m tempted to continue it but with animations. I’ve added it to a list of personal projects I want to pursue.

Goal is to head to bed in a bit. Been awhile since I’ve posted some inspiration. I’ve been missing it.

Loge the transitions and various loops. Also great color scheme.

Snapchat Stories | By Alex Pope

These animations are great examples of editorial work. For mochat tonight’s discussion was about editorial motion design. It was a really interesting talk and I learned a lot about the process for that area of the industry. Every time I participate I learn something new. I swear Mochat is responsible for 75% of my motion graphics education. Great fun discussion and lots of learning. Might use this as a bouncing off point for other great projects.

Friends & Inktober Day 8

I spent nearly the entire day watching Friends episodes…because I totally have a life. I’m a social being that leaves the house on weekends…for……..walking the dog………Yeah…I’m just gonna spend this weekend watching Friends episodes and Orphan Black. I don’t need to be social, pfffttt…that’s for non-sloth humans. I can totally just live out my life through the characters in TV shows instead of experiencing fresh air.

Well…I did start planning for NaNoWriMo…and I walked the dog and did Inktober…so today wasn’t completely lost. Okay bedtime so I can actually have a productive Sunday. I need to do something. My hustle did not exist today. Just poofed away. Which is disappointing because the day did start out so promising with a skype convo with my friend for brainstorming plots for NaNo. If only I had stuck to my agreement to make the bed every morning and put Citrus on…Well…can’t get back that day. Tomorrow will be more productive. If it isn’t, I’m gonna need some angry shaming looks. ‘Cause today was just ridiculous with the Friends binge watch.

NaNo Seeking Writer | WIP

I spent 8+ hours animating today, and about 8+ hours yesterday. I didn’t make it too far last night before I crashed despite a zillion cups of coffee. At least it reinforced my love for motion design. There are not many other project types that keep my attention that long, aside from lettering. It was nice animating all day.

Aside from tons of animation, I drank a lot of coffee. I do plan to keep animating the title sequence. Due to time constrictions, I pulled out some of the boards. It got overwhelming animating every square and trying to figure out the shape layers. So many null objects. So many. It took me a couple hours to get in the groove. I realize I should have begun animating last week, but I just wanted to keep designing!

This project is so much fun and I’m happy with the current result, although I want a complete version of it still. For that portfolio! I didn’t even get a chance to tinker with the sound design! For future projects, I’ll make sure to start animating sooner.

I’ll continue working on it, but here’s the current state of the animation. Feel free to give a critique since it’s still a work in progress!

Nano & Flags

This is me not paying attention to the time because I was Nanoing.

Working on a flag for the city my characters live in. I’m getting a bit too into the world building…this morning I realized I’m more excited for the side characters than I am for my main. -sigh- But I must keep on, I am behind word wise and need to catch up. I’m blaming it on the fact that I keep going back to edit my lexicon instead of actually moving my plot along.

Anyway, this is my flag so far for the capitol Vermatt. I’m still working through the actual design but color wise I’m mostly set.Screen Shot 2016-07-09 at 12.01.56 AM

The red comes from the color everyone is obsessed with because of the red-gold metal. I will note this is not rose-gold, but red gold. In my head world all the buildings are a shiny deep red color.

The purple is the color of the “merge”. I’m still working out the details, but basically two civilizations grew on different continents. One was dominated by the use of dragons which meant they didn’t have much in the way of tech because they used dragons for any type of war fought and defense. The other was in a land where large fire breathing dragons didn’t exist, only medium sized lizards, thus allowing for the way of advancing tech in their wars. It wasn’t until the planes and larger more reliable ships were invented that the land of tech discovered the thriving society full of dragons. They of course using their guns and advanced weaponry took over and harnessed the dragons for different reasons like sport and farming. That’s kind of the loose idea so far, I’m still figuring out the details of this world history. Anyway purple is the merging of colors so they use it as a tribute to the governments joining together to create the larger cities and hubs for trade.

Gold the color for foods because Vermatt is known for trading lots of food. Greens are for dragons and blues are for the technology as well as sea. I have yet to settle on what White represents in this world, it might be for the Snowcap Nations in the northern part of the continent which only trade in the capitol Vermatt.

The shapes don’t quite make sense to me yet. I had a doodle for the original design of trying to make it feel like they were blending together to feel like one originally, but through tinkering in AI ended up with this one. I’m not sure I like it compared to my original doodle…I think I’ll have to go back through the history of Auvusson (the continent). I have too much in my head and not enough written down, nor thought through to really explain well. More at a later date.

NaNo Sketches & Animation Inspiration 62

I’ve been Nanoing so I don’t have as much progress on the selfi animation currently. I’ve included a quick little Animation Inspiration since I don’t have a lot of content today.

Below is a sketch to go with my novel. It’s a house that my characters live in at the beginning of my story. It’s kind of a tree house because part of it are built into tree trunks and they use them as support. I tried to do an overlay sketch of how the house looks and functions before I set it inside the trees that support it. So more work to do on that still before I’m satisfied. I’m trying to make sure I keep things straight so I’m using various sketches plus an extra doc with notes to make sure I don’t get too lost in my story.

Animation Process | By Diego Soto

This is hilarious to watch. Great movement of that spaceship.
