Mylard stared around at the spaceship’s control center. Tomkin found herself floating upward a moment later. The girls made eye contact, nodded and began looking for the box again.

Valrose was narrating as the two searched. “Looks like they’ve discovered that the box transforms their surroundings! I’m excited to see who’s going to win though! What they don’t know is that there’s always something dangerous lurking in each of these worlds! The more times they go through the spaces the more dangerous the threats are! Now, of course, the question is how do these girls get out of this? We’ll have to find out!”

Mylard spotted something that looked like the box for a moment but upon floating closer realized it was a little portable screen. She grabbed it and turned it on. The screen flickered to life showing a security camera of the spaceship. She swiped through the screen seeing herself and Tomkin floating and a large figure in the corner–wait–she looked up just as the figure attacked her.

Mylard found herself thrown against the controls, sparks flying as she hit them. Tomkin startled saw a dark figure she couldn’t quite piece together what it was, but it came at her. She propelled herself away and into a hallway. Her heart hammering as she aimed to get away. Just as she left the room a loud alarm sounded.

WARNING. OXYGEN SYSTEMS HAVE BEEN TURNED OFF. PLEASE TURN ON MANUALLY FROM THE CONTROL CENTER OR THE ENGINE ROOM. THERE IS 98% OXYGEN REMAINING. WARNING… the message repeated.

Tomkin froze as she heard it and found herself floating a little far to the left, she hit the metal of the spaceship hard. She winced and looked up. The figure was still coming at her. It moved fluidly and terrifyingly for her as if about to consume her whole.

Mylard floated aimlessly for a few moments in shock as the stinging burns from hitting the controls pained her. She jolted suddenly as she remembered what was going on. She twisted around reminding herself that she should look for the box.

Day 14 of 365

Mylard found another dead end. Her frown was starting to droop and she wanted to cry. It’d been nearly half an hour of circles and she felt so confused. She took a deep breath and turned away from the dead end. She tensed hearing a scream which meant that one of her opponents was enduring something horrible. She hoped it wouldn’t be too painful, but was doubtful hearing the screaming. A moment later the intense yelling ended and the maze returned to its silence. Mylard had stopped moving during the yelling.

Taking another deep breath the young woman started again. She was remembering the last thing her sister had said to her. Just do your best Mylard. We know you’ll make everyone proud. She reminded herself of how much an honor this was and how grateful she was to be entered. It didn’t feel great to be in this terrifying maze, but the riches and honor would be worth it. She just wanted to do right by her older sister.

Turning a corner Mylard was surprised to see a clearing an in the center the glowing light of the ring. It was on a blue table and raised up. She froze taking in the sight. The rules were clear. Get the ring and place it on your finger to win. Mylard took a small step towards it, paused and searched. She wondered what would be on her way to get it. In every episode of the game, she had watched there was always something that prevented the last pair girls from getting to the ring.

Seeing nothing obvious she clutched the stun gun closer and inched carefully toward the ring. She felt like she was getting too close as she kept stepping toward it. Just as she reached the first step Tomkin appeared. Her orange hair was tangled and several scratch marks were bleeding down her stomach and arms. She looked around wildly wondering how she’d gotten to the clearing.

Mylard ran up the stairs hoping that it wouldn’t be a mistake. It was. The first step disappeared from her and Mylard found herself falling into someplace dark. She landed hard on a flat surface. Lamps flashed around her in a blinding manner and a high pitched noise filled her ears. But the thing that confused her was the stench. It was horrific and she couldn’t even describe it, but it made her want to vomit.

Valrose delighted that they had reached the clearing announced, “We’re in the final stage Ringers! Shall we see who gets to the ring first? There’s a poll up and running, tap your screen to tell us who you think will win! Mylard a regular girl who just somehow by chance got here, OR Tomkin, the legacy who has to live up to the pressure of two winning women!”

Tomkin froze seeing Mylard suddenly disappear. She had been there one second and then the next she wasn’t. She looked around wondering if the panther would follow her into this clearing. She didn’t want to make the same mistake as Mylard so she skipped the first step. The second one was solid. Breathing a sigh of relief she started toward the third but found her feet glued. Tomkin jerked at them but they were firm. Confused she looked down trying to–suddenly she was falling into the abyss.

Tomkin fell hard on top of Mylard who had barely stood up before being knocked back down. The wind knocked out of both girls and all senses being confused, made everything harder. They groaned and yelled trying to find themselves in the dark.

“OW! GET OFF!” Mylard yelled pushing Tomkin hard. Tomkin found herself suddenly hitting a wall. She yelped as one of her deep scratches got pressed by something.

It became apparent that both girls were in a tiny room of some making. Their senses were meant to be entirely overwhelmed by the experience. Tomkin closed her eyes and pulled her sunglasses down. It helped a little with the light. She turned around trying to understand what was going on.

Day 12 & 13 of 365

So I did start writing the other night but I literally fell asleep on my keyboard. When I check back I apparently only made it through one sentence. Did not realize I was that tired while writing. So we’re gonna just count this long post for both.

The clip faded off of Valrose and Mylard into the pre-game Valrose and Tomkin. Tomkin smiled, relaxed with a cup of tea in her hand. Valrose leaned forward.

“Tomkin, your mother, and grandmother were both champions of this game, how does it feel to be the third generation?” he asked. Tomkin suppressed the urge to punch him.

“Well, it’s an honor. I wouldn’t be here without them. Thanks, Mom! Thanks, Grandma,” she said waving to the camera with her eyes gleaming. She smiled.

“Do you feel that gives you an advantage at all?”

“Not really. After all, I still have to do all the hard work, and live up to the expectations,” she said with a coy smile. “The only advantage I have is the stories of being in the game.”

Valrose laughed his fake laugh, “Fair enough Tomkin. It’s a pleasure getting to know you. Now any advice you have for the contestants who want to enter next year?”

“Just do it. You’ll figure it out once you find out you’re in,” she said.

“Thanks,” Valrose said.

The screen flashed back to the present Valrose in his flashy suit and commentary of the ongoing game. The two girls were still in the maze with their stun guns. Tomkin was running from something. Her eyes and expression of fear paired with her frequent glances over the shoulder. She slipped and fell hard. Valrose was quick to tell the crowd about the nasty fall. Tomkin winced pulling herself up quickly despite the bit of blood dripping from her elbows and chin. She spun around looking for her stun gun. It was a few feet away from her, but just as she began toward it. A large panther jumped out.

Tomkin held herself prepared to dart into the bushes. The panther eyed at her his tail flicking in anger. She found her eyes darting at the stun gun which was now between them and the large cat. Her thoughts raced. And then she moved. A split-second later claws dug into her back as she grasped at the gun. The screams were loud and she somehow found her fingers around it. She threw her shoulder over as the panther ripped at her back and then shot. The stun gun hit the panther in the shoulder. It yowled angrily but released and went down.

Tomkin found herself bleeding but still in the game. She pulled herself up, wary of the unconscious beast and limped into the maze.

Day 11 of 365

Just keep on going.

Part 1

“Tell me Mylard, what is it about your personality that you think all the fans are attracted to?” Valrose said with a smirk. His green eyes sparkled way too much and all Mylard thought is Why am I here?

“Uhhhh…My down to earth attitude?” she managed to respond. She combs a flyaway hair behind her ear and shifts her eyes between Valrose and the ground in nervousness.

“I think you’re just sparkling and such a natural beauty! Tell me Mylard, how many weeks have you been training for today’s immensely important show? We’re so honored to have you here,” Valrose said. He leaned in closer to her, touching her arm and shoulder. Mylard shifted in nervousness.

“Not long, just since I heard I was entered,” she stammered.

The clip fades off of Valrose and Mylard while the interview between Valrose and Tomkin appears. Tomkin is smiling, relaxed with a cup of tea in her hand. Valrose says…

Animation Inspiration 96

NaNoWriMo started. I nixed the vlog idea because I don’t need to have another task on my to-do list right now. Maybe next year. Also behind already. Spent a large portion of today reworking an ‘about me’ and writing blurbs on my website. It’s going well, but I found myself distracted by everything sometime around 3 pm. It’s been a bumpy ride since then. Goals are to get on track with wordcount tomorrow and launch my new site design.

It’s weird not having an inktober project to work on. I’m tempted to continue it but with animations. I’ve added it to a list of personal projects I want to pursue.

Goal is to head to bed in a bit. Been awhile since I’ve posted some inspiration. I’ve been missing it.

Loge the transitions and various loops. Also great color scheme.

These animations are great examples of editorial work. For mochat tonight’s discussion was about editorial motion design. It was a really interesting talk and I learned a lot about the process for that area of the industry. Every time I participate I learn something new. I swear Mochat is responsible for 75% of my motion graphics education. Great fun discussion and lots of learning. Might use this as a bouncing off point for other great projects.

One more day of Inktober!

Can’t believe there’s only one more day of Inktober left! Gonna have to pick a fun one for ‘Friend’ tomorrow. It’s been a quick and crazy month. I feel like I just started the challenge yesterday. Not as long as my 365 Days of Lettering, but still a large project. I love these types of habit based challenges.

Speaking of habit based challenges, National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo) begins Tuesday! I’m spending Monday gearing up for writing. Will be updating you on the progress. Still on the fence about vlogging the process. If I decide to do so look for an announcement video tomorrow. Updates will be on here and Twitter regardless of vlogging. I’m determined to win this year and have supplementary drawings or animations to post. Very excited!

Gonna go get to bed so I can get some important tasks out of the way tomorrow!

NaNo Seeking Writer | WIP

I spent 8+ hours animating today, and about 8+ hours yesterday. I didn’t make it too far last night before I crashed despite a zillion cups of coffee. At least it reinforced my love for motion design. There are not many other project types that keep my attention that long, aside from lettering. It was nice animating all day.

Aside from tons of animation, I drank a lot of coffee. I do plan to keep animating the title sequence. Due to time constrictions, I pulled out some of the boards. It got overwhelming animating every square and trying to figure out the shape layers. So many null objects. So many. It took me a couple hours to get in the groove. I realize I should have begun animating last week, but I just wanted to keep designing!

This project is so much fun and I’m happy with the current result, although I want a complete version of it still. For that portfolio! I didn’t even get a chance to tinker with the sound design! For future projects, I’ll make sure to start animating sooner.

I’ll continue working on it, but here’s the current state of the animation. Feel free to give a critique since it’s still a work in progress!

Title Sequence | WIP resume

Title sequence updates again! Most of my difficulties have lay within my lack of boards for the actual titles. Last week I had planned to just animate with shape layers well into the night, but after working these today I realize I should have had them done way earlier. Just thankful that the contest deadline got extended. I’m starting to wonder if I’d been able to finish at all. I think I would have done something, maybe not a great animation, but I would have finished. So thankful I have time to really hone and finesse this.

Below are the boards with text which is what I felt has been missing the last couple days. Animation resumes tomorrow. I plan on getting a better grasp of the timing and chronological order I want. Also I want to work on sound design since I have more time. Excited to get back into the groove of animating this!

More Vectors & Monday Goals

Today was draining…got some vectoring done, but we had a memorial in the middle of the day so I felt pretty emotionally drained after that. I wasn’t expecting to get much done after it, but I’m still finding myself frustrated with how behind I am. Tomorrow will be busy, but excited to take on the crazy this week will offer!

I have plans to rise early and work work work until I have to go down to Denver. There’s a panel for Denver Startup Week in the middle of the day on Meow Wolf. Super excited to attend! I might bring my computer down with me so that I can get some work done after the fact, or get on a bus back right away…I have yet to decide. Goal is to have all vectors done, animation files prepped, at just one animated square. I got this. #tired

Patterns & Fonts | Title Sequence WIP

Today was a busy day. Got to go peach picking with my grandmother and other family, visited my Aunt & Uncle’s new home, and then had a low key dinner party. It was anticipated since we’re always doing lots of activities when we come out to the Western Slope of Colorado. It’s fun, but draining.

I did draw an icon for the styleframes, but I have yet to mock it up in Illustrator. I didn’t get much farther than that drawing wise. I allotted time to figuring out what I wanted the type to say. I also took time finding a free font that looked similar or at least mimicked the feeling that is presented in the Man Seeking Woman titles. If you couldn’t tell I spent a lot of time reading the interview on Art of the Title.

You can see a couple pattern tests and the titles that I’ve started with. Will be testing some other ideas for the names, but for now these work. I’m working for funny but relatable when it comes to writing. I’ll have to brainstorm with a few writer friends for more ideas.

The font I decided to use is called Moon. It’s similar in style to the rounded look of Diamonds, but has a difference in variation. Still reflective of the style, but more importantly, free.  You can download it here if you like it!

I have another 5 hour+ drive back home to Boulder with the fam tomorrow so we’ll see how much work I get done. Depends quite a bit on the time we get back. Yay traffic. >_>

Night friends,
Kendall
