Verona smiled raising the alien gun slightly. Mr. Sandburg tensed.

“Maybe I should just turn you lot in,” Verona said. He looked over the group. “Who’s that?” he asked nodding to Ellis.

“None of your–” Diana started.

Mr. Sandburg shushed her. Verona rocked back on his heels. “I want him. I think he’s good bait. Or maybe I should take one of you. I mean, do you think the Empire is over how you traitors backstabbed them?”

“Like you’re any better,” Marilyn interjected. “If memory serves me, you’re stuck here on this planet in exile just like the rest of us. What was it like getting exiled for falling in love with the prince?”

“That’s a petty insult even for you,” Verona replied. “At least my love was pure intentions. You lot thought it’d be smart to rob from the Empire.”

Lettering Wednesdays

*Technically it’s Thursday since I’m posting this before going to bed and it’s after midnight, I’ll try to post earlier in the future.

I’m not finished with this lettering piece but I thought I’d screencap the drafts I’m working on for you. It’s a nice bit of process while I figure out word hierarchy. It’s a quote I feel is quite relevant these days and an important issue.

A patriot must always be ready to defend his country against his government.
-Edward Abbey

Will have a post on Friday with some fun illustrations. I was hoping I’d get a reply from someone before posting it, but it doesn’t seem likely so I’m just going to post it on Friday. Excited to share that with you, it’s a fun creative piece that I spent a lot of time working on.

Happy arting friends!

Perfect is the Enemy of Good

So I made a small step for my website update. Not quite a rebrand, yet, but I wanted to get new projects up for a job application. So the portfolio page has been updated and populated with a few more projects for viewing. I am working to navigate the site toward videos and illustration eventually. The rebranding process has been quite difficult because I’ve been wavering in the audience due to what my goals are. I’ve been confused about pushing toward hiring managers, freelance work, or just personal projects. They’re all a little different audience wise so picking the projects has been weighing on me. The job app reminded me to just post the projects and get it all up there.

Of course, I have more to add and change, but trying to live by the quote of ‘Perfect is the Enemy of Good.’ I was reminded of this today. I realized I’ve been stalled by the rebrand because of the need for the perfect way of posting projects and the perfect bio…etc. It’s been exhausting on my mental health because I keep working toward a goal only to doubt it because I’m not covering another target audience. Just being reminded of the quote changed my whole perspective on the website today. Better just to finish and have some little misalignments in the design than to continuously start over because it’s not perfect. Glad I made progress.

I also drew this earlier today. I’m calling them all Cactus Rats. Would be an interesting project to illustrate more of these Cactus Rats and give them all little stories…might be an interesting side project.

Till later friends. Remember Perfection is the Enemy of Good.

Missing This

I miss this blog too much to miss another day. -cry- I tried to soft ban myself until I had updated my website, but decided to do a rebrand. This has resulted in a much larger and longer project than the ban is meant for. On the other side of this, the ban was to motivate me into being productive…which…didn’t work so well.

Aside from extending a 4-hour project into a 1-2 week long project, I’ve taken up Neopets again. This comes at a bad time as I am heading into the rebrand and trying to finish all the projects I started this year. Thank the creator of Citrus, without you, I would be wasting a lot more time playing Hasee Bounce and collecting lint jelly from the not-so-secret jelly world on Neopia. I would also be tweeting more about how unproductive I am being and the woodpecker that is knocking at my second story window. The cat wants to eat you, please stop, Zorro knocks over my lamp and BB8 toy every time you try to eat a bug.

In other news, I am still taking on the three goal challenge I started. I keep adding more tasks which make reaching the end goals more difficult. Working on scaling back the ideas exploding and being realistic with what is accomplishable in a day. I find myself underestimating how easily I get distracted. Hence Citrus, planning, and focused goals.

I do better when I know what I want to accomplish and why. I’ve been having difficulties creating a new home page, about me, and organizing my portfolio. I attribute this to waffling on the target audience. I keep switching between targeting freelance clients and hiring managers at motion design companies. I know there is overlap, but I’m struggling with that focus. It affecting the brand image I want to create. To the point where I want to split into two websites, but I don’t. Even writing these thoughts makes me conflicted. I’ve been working on different strategies to figure out what I want. Will do another one tomorrow morning and hope my head clears.

Updates will come soon. I will be posting despite not finishing. The writing help clears my head and reminds me to keep making progress instead of letting the failure consume me. Plus, you keep me accountable and excited to show off process.

Thanks for reading!

Wolves & Color Combos

Working on trying to go to bed before 1 AM so that I get some good sleep in. Here’s a link to my Inktober and a screenshot of some color combos I’m working on while redoing my website. Starting to block on some layouts.

NaNo Seeking Writer | WIP

I spent 8+ hours animating today, and about 8+ hours yesterday. I didn’t make it too far last night before I crashed despite a zillion cups of coffee. At least it reinforced my love for motion design. There are not many other project types that keep my attention that long, aside from lettering. It was nice animating all day.

Aside from tons of animation, I drank a lot of coffee. I do plan to keep animating the title sequence. Due to time constrictions, I pulled out some of the boards. It got overwhelming animating every square and trying to figure out the shape layers. So many null objects. So many. It took me a couple hours to get in the groove. I realize I should have begun animating last week, but I just wanted to keep designing!

This project is so much fun and I’m happy with the current result, although I want a complete version of it still. For that portfolio! I didn’t even get a chance to tinker with the sound design! For future projects, I’ll make sure to start animating sooner.

I’ll continue working on it, but here’s the current state of the animation. Feel free to give a critique since it’s still a work in progress!

Animatics | Title Sequence WIP

I’m still working on my sound design skills. I don’t ever expect to be a professional, but I would like to know enough to make my own videos work for me. As a result of being an utter newb, I spent a couple hours trying to find a song for my animatic because I didn’t like the original one I picked. I think the once I found is much better suited, not perfect since I can’t exactly commission one…But it’ll work for the contest entry.

Below is an animatic with music. Rebuilding all the assets is still being worked out and how all animation is going to be. Some of the timing still needs reworking, I feel like some of the titles go by quite fast, but I want to keep everything timed with the music beats still. I’m also finicky on use of red in that one frame, but it makes sense… I’ll figure out how I want to portray it when I get to that particular animation. Feel free to watch and tweet me some critiques!

Okay, gonna go watch Stranger Things again with the parents.

Title Sequence | WIP resume

Title sequence updates again! Most of my difficulties have lay within my lack of boards for the actual titles. Last week I had planned to just animate with shape layers well into the night, but after working these today I realize I should have had them done way earlier. Just thankful that the contest deadline got extended. I’m starting to wonder if I’d been able to finish at all. I think I would have done something, maybe not a great animation, but I would have finished. So thankful I have time to really hone and finesse this.

Below are the boards with text which is what I felt has been missing the last couple days. Animation resumes tomorrow. I plan on getting a better grasp of the timing and chronological order I want. Also I want to work on sound design since I have more time. Excited to get back into the groove of animating this!

Extended Deadlines are the Best

Good news, I can sleep tonight. After all that stress about making the deadline for the Pond5 Title Sequence contest this week they extended the contest till the 30th!!! I CAN SLEEP GUYS. SLEEEEEEEP. Which is important because I have a lot of networking opportunities tomorrow…after the 4 I’ve already done this week….so much follow up. I’m so tired, but having so much fun. Denver Startup Week is so amazing!

Since the contest is extended I halted my hasty animating. Now I can focus on making good animations and finessing, rather than rushing. Still going to hustle and get more animation done tonight, but now I can stop at a reasonable time like midnight. There’s no need for me to look and feel like my animation right now.

Here’s a short preview. Ignore the real cursor. If it wasn’t obvious I was prepared for a long night considering how tired I’ve been from Startup Week. Glad I can relax a little bit. Still got tons to do, but now I can have better animation!!!

More Vectors & Monday Goals

Today was draining…got some vectoring done, but we had a memorial in the middle of the day so I felt pretty emotionally drained after that. I wasn’t expecting to get much done after it, but I’m still finding myself frustrated with how behind I am. Tomorrow will be busy, but excited to take on the crazy this week will offer!

I have plans to rise early and work work work until I have to go down to Denver. There’s a panel for Denver Startup Week in the middle of the day on Meow Wolf. Super excited to attend! I might bring my computer down with me so that I can get some work done after the fact, or get on a bus back right away…I have yet to decide. Goal is to have all vectors done, animation files prepped, at just one animated square. I got this. #tired
