More Vectors | Title Sequence Process

Why is furniture shopping so tiring? I spent half my day at IKEA…I’m tired. But getting closer to finished with those vectors. I’m slowly becoming a morning person so I’ll do my best to wake up early to finish the vectoring tomorrow. It’d be nice if I can start animating before midnight tomorrow…I might shorten the animation due to time constraints…Or like I said yesterday, abandon sleep.

Vector Till You Fall Asleep

Still got loads to do, but progress is progress. I went back to the drawing board. Really tried to figure out what all the squares will look like before vectoring. I tried to draw something for every single square. The lack of a solid plan was hindering me. Not to self do not generally label, be specific. I’m still working out where each square will goes, but there are specific aspects I want to correlate. Example clicking the ‘bold’ button will bold the text at the same time. Similar to the arrow being shot and hitting the heart in the original. Since the grid is modular I’ll be easy to switch them around once I’ve finished vectoring.

I plan to stay up a bit later tonight to finish at least one or two more boards. Animation is going to crazy, not to mention it’ll take a least a day to prep everything. Cross fingers I finish on time. I might have bitten off more than I can chew…might have to pull an all nighter or two. Unless someone wants to help out animation wise? I might just have to cancel some Denver Startup Week plans. We’ll see if I’m on track tomorrow.

Patterns & Fonts | Title Sequence WIP

Today was a busy day. Got to go peach picking with my grandmother and other family, visited my Aunt & Uncle’s new home, and then had a low key dinner party. It was anticipated since we’re always doing lots of activities when we come out to the Western Slope of Colorado. It’s fun, but draining.

I did draw an icon for the styleframes, but I have yet to mock it up in Illustrator. I didn’t get much farther than that drawing wise. I allotted time to figuring out what I wanted the type to say. I also took time finding a free font that looked similar or at least mimicked the feeling that is presented in the Man Seeking Woman titles. If you couldn’t tell I spent a lot of time reading the interview on Art of the Title.

You can see a couple pattern tests and the titles that I’ve started with. Will be testing some other ideas for the names, but for now these work. I’m working for funny but relatable when it comes to writing. I’ll have to brainstorm with a few writer friends for more ideas.

The font I decided to use is called Moon. It’s similar in style to the rounded look of Diamonds, but has a difference in variation. Still reflective of the style, but more importantly, free.  You can download it here if you like it!

I have another 5 hour+ drive back home to Boulder with the fam tomorrow so we’ll see how much work I get done. Depends quite a bit on the time we get back. Yay traffic. >_>

Night friends,
Kendall

Title Sequence Brainstorm

I’m using this blog as a brainstorming session for the title sequence project. Bare with my strange style for the moment. I have screenshots of Man Seeking Woman. In the captions I’m writing ideas of what I could illustrate in this section. It’s still general at this point, but I want a plan for the story it’s illustrating. It’ll help me come up with relevant ideas. I hopefully will be able to get some vectors started tomorrow night that go along with this theme.

Lettering Process

Here’s quick process shot of my lettering project so far. I’m done with the finalization of the layout and sketches, but indecisive if I want to go back to ink it. It looks fine in graphite, but I did it all on graph paper…so the photoshop edits have been difficult. Hence why not finished. I’ll update you tomorrow, but probably going to push the actual finalizing till Tuesday or Wednesday.

I’m leaving on a quick weekend visit the grandmother trip. That means 5 hours in a car tomorrow and on Monday when we drive back. I don’t have the greatest of surfaces to work on while there so if I decide to ink, I will hold off. Just because I want a lot of desk space and quiet concentration time. Family trips tend to be constant interruptions. Very disruptive when trying to ink and not make wobbly lines.

Since, I don’t have deskspace I plan on using all downtime possible to work on the title sequence. I’m leaning toward the Man Seeking Woman title sequence just because of the challenge it entails, but I have keep in mind that I don’t have a lot of time left. It might be more fun and interesting, however I have a tendency to overestimate my abilities thus bad estimates of the time it takes to finish. Aiming for all assets for sequence to be finished by Monday night so that I can spend as much time animating as possible.

Now I got to go pack, so night friends.

Art Project Updates

I’ve decided to create NanoWriMo title credits. I’m leaning toward using the Broad City sequence, but I did start thinking about a way to use the Man Seeking Woman sequence. Both are great sequences to work with idea wise. I’ve read the interviews for both so I now can see the reasoning behind a lot of process and design choices. It’s a matter of how I want to challenge myself now, because both are challenging in their own rights. Broad City has cel animation, while Man Seeking Woman would be a lot of After Effects and Illustrator practice…either way I’d be excited to dive into both creations.

I think the matter now is to make styleframes for both ideas. From there I can decide which one is the stronger theme. I might even leave it up to you!

Aside from the title credit contest I’m working on, I am still working on the lettering of a Jeremy Cowart quote. I have plans to finalize the design tomorrow and post it since there’s a kickstarter going on for a unique and inspiring hotel he’s starting, and I want to make sure that it’s up before it closes! Even though I haven’t donated to it I would love to post a quote and promote it in the last days! I’m aiming for at least $1 toward that campaign…I should donate tomorrow before I forget.

Other updates are that I need to do a Bout of Books wrap up video. Honestly, I didn’t read. I picked up a couple of my books with the intention of reading but ended up just carrying them around everywhere I went rather than actually reading. So…yeah….at least I got some video practice. Still getting comfortable being on camera. Practice is practice.

I am editing the Ogallala video. I’m going to try to finish that by Friday so that it’s just out of the way. Also I’m taking too long on it. I know that I’m just procrastinating on it because of the terrible shakiness and trying to find that “perfect” music. Just need to get it done and stop procrastinating. I’m falling for “shiny object” projects rather than finishing the ones I’ve already started. Now that I think about it…I haven’t touched the video ideas I had back in January in a really long time…wow…I need to get that back on track. You know what…I just need to make myself content marketing calendar and schedule some dates. I’m just now realizing how far off track some of my projects are. I need to address  all my”shiny object” projects. It’s great that I have so many ideas and projects going on, but if I’m not actually finishing anything then…Need to go back and rethink my strategies a bit.

Yay…welcome to Kendall has a 2016 resolution realization. Welp, tomorrow is a new day and it’s time I go back through my goals and progress toward them to help figure out a schedule. I never gave myself proper and public deadlines so I didn’t stick to them. I’m remembering that Snackadoodle idea…why haven’t I continued that? Oops…I’m doing the shiny object thing again.

Okay guys, organizing time, here’s what I’m posting tomorrow. A schedule of all the projects I am currently working on and when they have to be officially posted, Jeremy Cowart Lettering, AND styleframes for NaNoWriMo Title Sequence. So look out for those two tomorrow. If I try to post animation inspiration or make up some dumb excuse as to why these 2 things are not done please tweet at me your disappointment. Nothing like failing on the internet to shame you into being more productive. I know I’ll be busy, but no excuses.

Night friends,
Kendall

Broad City & Title Credit Ideas

Pardon me for the lateness tonight, I decided to watch the Rio Closing Olympic Ceremonies with my mother. I hadn’t had a chance prior to this…although I still never saw the Opening Ceremonies for that matter. Absolutely beautiful designs and costumes. Had fun watching.

I am planning for one more day before I finalize a project for the Title Credits Contest. I’m debating another idea of using the Broad City credits and replacing it with NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month). It’d be fun. If I can’t decide on a title credit to mimic I might do that instead. I’m struggling because I have existing ideas for these book stories, and can’t seem to find title credits that feel similar creatively…or at least possible for my timeframe, skill level, and equipment. Additionally I’m tempted to wait until I finish reading the books I’ve been working on this past week. Just so I have more material to work with.

I did come to another idea for the titles…but I’m reluctant just because it’d be a huge pivot. It’d be turning my selfi animation into title credits… It seems perfect, but I’m feeling a little guilt in letting go of all the existing work. I don’t know…I almost want to make two different animations now. The one I’ve been working on and then a title sequence… The question is if I want to enter that into the contest? or just make my own entirely? If anyone has any thoughts on this let me know…

I put the Broad City credits below so you can see the fun energetic feeling they have. If I take that route it’d be easy to recreate for NaNoWriMo. It also adheres to the creative kooky brand NaNo writes in. So lots of potential. Also promotion for my favorite nonprofit. If you have time I also recommend reading through the title process on Art of the Title. It’s interesting to see how the ideas come about and how they transform.

Animation Inspiration 75

Spent today babysitting and drawing with the kids. I sketched on my ipad and have yet to transfer over to my computer. Might continue drawing later, if not will share the sketches tomorrow.

Lovely transitions throughout the entire piece. Leaves a great feeling and has great movement for the eye. The animators do a wonderful job with helping the eye follow lines and focus on key elements. Great design work and a pleasure to watch!

Love this. I’ve been watching Olympic athletes and wanting to make some gifs. Have yet to find enough time in the day to make all the projects. Soon. This animation is simple, well as simple as animating a gymnast can be, and pleasant to watch. Great drawings and sound design.

Photo Highlights from Family Roadtrip to Ogallala, NE

Family camping trip was fun. We drove up to Lake McConaughy in Ogallala, Nebraska. Took a ton of photos which I have shared some below. Still processing all the video I took and should hopefully have something up by the end of the week, I make no promises since I have some other things to tend to. Along with the photos and video I did a few sketches I plan to scan and upload. I will be making a few digital drawings in addition to add to this personal project.

I’m will be uploading my photos to a proper gallery which I will link in the next blog. Below are the highlights. I had trouble picking.

BookTube-A-Thon Title Sequence WIP

Working on my title sequences for my BookTube-A-Thon TBR. I was aiming to enter the giveaway for a box of books, but I realized that I didn’t have enough time to finish. So here’s the process of the lettering so far. I’m in the middle of the vectoring and have to still animate it a bit. Not to mention edit all the video I filmed today. Planning on doing some more takes tomorrow. I don’t know if I said this before, but I’m using this as a test run for my Selfi Animation, also, it’s been fun diving into more lettering.

I have a lot to do tomorrow so hoping that I can finish this up and get it done by the end of tomorrow so I don’t have to worry about it. I’m trying to get ahead this week so that I can allot more time to reading next week.
