A New Project

First off Happy Christmas! I’ll have another post later tonight with more holiday oriented stuff.

We switched the days we’re driving over to see family so I didn’t get to work on things as much as I wanted. Plus the painkillers only a lot me so much time before I fall asleep. Still getting work done, just trying to balance the time.

I’m starting on a new project. The goal is to turn this into a motion comic and have the first chapters up before 2017. This is a quick little introduction to some characters. I am still perfecting the illustration style since drawing humans isn’t my strong suit. The main one is a character called Emerson. Following that are her uncles, Romaros and Darvil.

I’ll be doing more sketches over the holiday. I’m certain that their face shapes will change a bit and the concept art will differ. I have a ton of ideas that I want to get out so there will be no shortage of art on the way. Goal is to sketch portrait a day in any medium. I might post it every day here, or just round up the sketches and do a dump at the end of the week. Depends on how many are done digitally. I also want to start animating some parts of the story so that will be an upcoming thing. Just a lot going on and of course holidays are in motion so getting time to illustrate is difficult.

Anyway, hope your Christmas Eve is wonderful and I’ll have something more tonight!

Art Updates

Got some good art projects on the way. Been trying to get as much done as possible during the day, but gotta do some other work and family time too. Here’s a little preview of an upcoming project I’ve been working on for the last couple days. Got a lot to work on. The lettering styles don’t match as well when transferred from hand drawn to digitally illustrated. I spent awhile vectoring it only to scrap that whole lead because it didn’t fit the style I want. I have to add the last words in the quote which are ‘I am one’ and design the illustration. It’s from the book The Abyss Surrounds Us by Emily Skrutskie. She asked me to do this since I had a few lazy days of waking up after 9 AM. It’s technically punishment for waking up late, but I always have fun working on these so maybe I should sleep in more.

I hope to have a finished version done by the end of the weekend, but no promises since I have so different projects to do! I always get so busy working on gifts during the holiday season. Not to mention that now I’ve been asked to learn Sketch for UI/UX design work. It’s not hard but it’s a different workflow from Adobe products so the key commands are going to take some getting use to. I just finished listening to the Animalators episode with John Schlemmer the Motion Lead at Google. I’m fascinated by the idea of incorporating motion into UI. I’m going to read through the Material Design Motion guidelines for some extra homework. I’m really interested in how all of that works. Who knows maybe it’ll get me a job at Google? Probably not, but I’m interested in reading that nonetheless.

Here’s a quick update on that dog Xmas gift I’m working on. Not satisfied with the coloring style, might return to that black and white version but clean it up. It could be a case of more detail too. I’m in that middle area of not sketchy nor polished enough.

That does it for the art updates of the day. I will be working on lots tomorrow so tune in for the rest of the work and final versions!

Xmas Gift Drawings

I drew a dog. Now I have to finish shading it and colorize before drawing another dog. Also started some other work for the holiday gifting. Just a lot of animation stuff to do as well as working on things for the Adobe Creative Residency. Starting on some of the projects related to the ideas I have. Also gotta get this blog in order. I haven’t decided if I want to continue posting in 2017. If I do then I need to organize the blog better, especially with all the art I create. I’ll let you know in the upcoming weeks what I decide.

Inktober Porcupine

I really need to fix my sleep schedule again. Been staying up later and later and still waking up at 9. Not helpful. Also planning to get back to that internship animation I got distracted from. Would be a lot more useful for that job searching if I had more animations to show. More on that in the days to come.

Here’s my Inktober post of the day. I want to learn more about porcupines now! I didn’t realize that they’re divided up into two different families. Also that some live in trees.

Sketches & Project Updates

Today is project and life updates time.

I’ve decided to ink the lettering, but that decision was just made 5 minutes ago so I have no updates for that project. The kickstarter failed so they’re going to launch a new one. I plan on waiting to release the fully inked project around that time so that I can promote it. As an offshoot of Creative Spaces TV, where I heard the Jeremy Cowart quote, I’m tempted to make some handlettering fan art…but I’m officially am back burnering that idea right now. I have Shiny Object Syndrome, thus, I have more important projects I must work on. Should I magically finish all the ones I have going on I will come back to that idea. I always want to do everything at once which results in getting nothing done at all. Must not fall into another burnout from overload of too many projects!

Below are a few quick sketches from my notebook for the title sequence project. I have plans tomorrow for a brainstorm with a friend so I can figure out more items. I need to get a move on this, falling behind according to my schedule. I need to start animating soon or I won’t finish on time!

Lettering Sketches

-yawn- I’m a bit tired from a long day. I didn’t make too much today. I’m sharing my few sketches for a lettering I’ve been working on the past week. I’m hoping to finish it this week. I’m devoting a large portion of tomorrow to sketches and decisions for the title sequence contest. Updates on that tomorrow.

Night,

Digital Plein Air Sketches

I got distracted by the internet today. I did make this as a result of the distraction, although, t’was not the original reason I got on the computer. Sometimes I go on the Adobe Twitch to motivate me to work. Instead of animating, I saw that Syd was doing digital plein painting, so I joined in at the last hour or so to create these two scenes. Was a fun idea and quick project. I’ve never thought of going through Google Earth and finding awesome places to draw from. So, new pass time activity.

Update on other projects, still really behind on the camping video. I also need to “eat the frog” and finish animating for bootcamp. I have a new desk setup with a large monitor which helps with animation and video editing. So much nicer to animate with a lot of screen real estate. I don’t know why I didn’t move my monitor up to my room sooner. It’s so nice! The camping video is taking awhile due to lack of a tripod. Takes longer to find good footage. I’m gonna stop complaining about my lack of progress and go work on something.

Hope you all made something today! ‘Cause at least you’re making something, which is better than nothing.

Bye!

Animation Inspiration 73 | Backpack Sketch & Interactive Olympic Site

Drew another backpack sketch while watching Syd Weiler’s Twitch stream today. I like going on there to watch other people create. It’s inspiring and motivating. The problem is that my computer overheats if I watch a stream and try to animate at the same time. It’s fun to sketch, but I would prefer animating at the same time. Oh well, as long as I’m creating something.

Also sharing this awesome website about some of the Olympic athletes. I like the incorporation of motion graphics and video as it explains how each of the athletes move. If you have time I recommend going through each of the featured people. It’s very interesting. Love the interactivity of the site. I’m enjoying the trend of using videos as the site background.

Camping items

Some quick sketches of items that I took and used during the camping trip. Still need to do some tweaking. Had fun working through the whole process on my cintiq. Usually I end up with a combo of analogue and digital sketches, but this time I just started in photoshop. I’m pleased with the illustrations.

Sketching & Photo Touchup

Not very productive today so no new project launch. Might do a test tomorrow, but I have to prioritize my Character Animation Bootcamp lessons. I worked on a photo touchup of myself from when I was approx 4 or 5. Got that before & after so you can see what I did. Glorious throwback. Also made a little photoshop sketch of a tent since I’m going camping later this week.

Check those out below and come back tomorrow for updates. I hope to continue the tent sketch and test out my animation project idea.
