Hi.

Hi friends.

It’s been a long time. Well, life is crazy and I just haven’t sat down to write you all like I did last year and for the beginning of this year. So, with only two months left of 2017 and a whole lot of crazy going on, I felt I should bring this back. Just a general life update and a new place to document again.

So, I’ve been working for VaynerMedia for the last few months. It’s been amazing and very chaotic with lots of moving to New York City and within the city, meetups, making new friends, parties, and so much more. I haven’t documented the last few months of my life as well as I like for posting here so if you’ll bear with me. I plan on making a couple projects to explain those months and digging through my phone photos. Until then, just wanted to pop in and say stuff is coming.

Currently, I have a lot of writing to do since it’s National Novel Writing Month. I’m creating a lot of fun content over on my Instagram which I recommend going over to if you want to keep better tabs on everything I’ve been creating as well as my day-to-day.

Basically, I’m writing again. I’m debating if I want to do a daily journalling like I did in 2016, starting on Jan 1st. I think it’ll be good for keeping track of all of the amazing things I’ve been creating and doing and will continue doing. I get busy and there is only so much time in a day, so I don’t want to over-commit myself to a daily blog if I don’t have the time or energy to do so. But anyways, I’m rambling.

So Hi. How are you? Anyone still read this strange and weird journal I crafted about my projects? Excited to write again friends.

It’s been Awhile

It’s been awhile.

I took a little break from publishing posts here after the hustle of posting all the time last year. Last time I picked three words for the year: Make, Move, & Empower. I still plan to give this blog better organization and a layout update. I’ve been hustling at some other projects. One of the reasons why I didn’t want to have a daily habit this year is that it prioritizes quantity over quality. The exception to this is my drawing habit because I really want to improve at drawing humans and animals. I’m replacing most of my daily habits with larger scale and longer projects. They are now weekly based rather than daily allowing for me to give attention to detail and improve the quality.

Additionally, with the upcoming blog layout update, I want to change the theme of this blog. It’s not going far off from 2016. I started this with the intention of improving my storytelling ability, but it became an art blog. I posted more artistic process and inspirational pieces than stories last year. I don’t remember if I officially declared the shift in focus during 2016, but I am for 2017. More quality content will be heading your way as a result. I have a few articles that I didn’t get to during 2016 that I’ll have up next week and then I’m planning out a content calendar.

Plans are to update Monday & Fridays. Mondays I’ll leave as more fun and informative art posts while Fridays are inspiration and freebies for myself. Additionally, follow me on Twitter for full updates on other projects. I’m plunging into the illustration world by creating a motion comic based on a story I’ve had in my head for what feels like forever! It’s the same one that I’ve tried to write for NaNoWriMo. If anyone followed through the year and remembers me drawing random character designs or my character’s house, that’s the same story. I decided to take it on in a new medium. That gets updated every Tuesday & Thursday. Wednesdays are lettering days. I’m leaving weekends free for fun!

Schedule:

Mondays & Fridays: Blog Post Here!
Tuesdays & Thursdays: Motion Comic over on Tumblr!
Wednesday: Lettering! Here

Once again, check out my twitter if you want to see any updates and a bunch of figure drawing art I’ve been practicing! My Instagram also gets the occasional update or throwback art.

Thanks for reading! Updates soon!

2017 New Year Words

I’ve decided to forgo the 365-day habit this year, this is a change after two years. I love daily habit building resolutions, but I find that I don’t really work on those projects but scramble something, anything, together last minute. I’m working toward quantity rather than quality. In some ways, this is great for measuring progress and keeping me going, but at the end of the year, I don’t know how much quantifying has helped. It’s changed me somewhat but I need something better for 2017.

As I work toward many different goals I have picked three words of value to keep to. The first word is Move. This word represents movement in time, steps toward or away from a goal. I hope to move forward, but I must not stand still. Although 2016 I stepped forward in my mindset I did not move far in career and location. I want to avoid being still. The word ‘move’ also applies to getting my body moving in exercise. Lastly, as a love of animation, I want to move those drawings and create. Which leads to my second word, Make.

Make comes from Neil Gaiman’s Make Good Art speech. I remind myself to make good art no matter what has happened in life, good or bad. I want to make 2017 my year. I create my year and I will make my projects and goals happen.

The third word has always been a word I held close to my heart but for some reason never dare to work on. It’s Empower. I want to inspire and empower others to do what they love to make and move their world. I plan to find ways to enable myself so that I can build others up. I like the word empower over things like inspire and value because it means that I’m helping others to grow and feel confident to do things themselves. It’s permission to be your own boss to allow someone to claim their rights. Just thinking about the word gives it power and grows the idea. It’s a beautiful blossoming idea in my mind and I want to take the strength of that word and give it others as well as empower myself.

There are many projects and goals that I have but I want to stand by these words for the year. To use them as a measurement for my growth. If you’re still looking for what to do for your New Year’s Resolutions perhaps pick a word or more. I suggest keeping it to three at max because words hold weight. Picking too many might leave you confused and conflicted. I feel like these three are mine for the year and I hope they will guide me to make good choices with my time, relationships, work, and goals.

I’ll be showing more of my projects in 2017 and how these words help me create them. Please bare with me for the next week while I redo my website and clean up my internet homes. Lots of dusting to do!

Thanks for reading and Happy New Year!

2016 Highlights & Review

Here are some highlights from 2016 and my New Year’s Resolutions.

It’s interesting looking at to what this blog evolved to. It started with stories and then turned into this journal of trying to keep myself on track with goals and habits. I’m proud of keeping up my habit. Missed a few days but kept to it almost every day this year. Here’s the favorite posts from the year. There’s more of course, but I can’t pick all of them!

Proud of all the hard work I put in this year, but still got a lot to get done. I looked through the original resolutions I had for 2016 to see what I had accomplished and pivoted.

  1. Animation Shorts: Make some shorts to advance my portfolio.
    • Pivoted this one into learning better animation skills from School of Motion. I’m really proud of how far I’ve come in animating with After Effects. I feel more confident in where I want to go career-wise as a result.
    • Created some GIFs and worked on a couple larger animations. Some are not finished but I hope to finish them in January.
  2. Stories: Learn how to tell better ones
    • Changed this to learning through watching and analyzing short animations. I wrote a few stories through the year, but I changed focus to learning stories for animation and film.
  3. Minimalism: Start getting rid of things that don’t add value to my life.
    • I never made a full commitment to this one so…It did save me many times during the year when I did want to buy objects. A good reminder to check if I actually needed it or if I just wanted it. Still need to clean out and donate many things, though.
  4. A career job: Get a career job in graphic design.
    • Got one at the beginning of the year, but after that, I kind of dwindled. I lost a lot of confidence after I had to turn down a freelance project for the first time. November’s Startup Weekend really helped bring back that confidence. I think I will be able to focus better and apply for many things out of my comfort zone now.
  5. Read more.
    • I’m def going to make a habit of reading a minimum of 15 pages a night. I read some books but I’m disappointed in the amount of reading I actually did.
  6. Start a Youtube channel.
    • ACCOMPLISHED. I didn’t post much after the Booktube-a-thon but I started and that was the whole goal. I will hopefully post more in 2017 and find my footing there. I’m still camera awkward, but the more I practice the better it’ll be.

I’m happy with what I’ve done this year, a little annoyed at some parts of the work ethic, but excited to change these bad habits. Can’t wait to see what I make of 2017! I’ll admit 2016 was difficult with all the deaths and the sad moments, but we’re still here pushing forward. I’m just so excited to be out with the old and in with the new. I’m excited to work and make all the new goals real!

Happy New Year friends! Hope you’re celebrating and looking forward to making 2017 amazing! I’ll have a post with my 2017 New Year’s Resolutions tomorrow! Have a great party and stay safe!

Been Awhile

Goodness, it has been awhile since I last posted. I got sick right after Xmas day. Might be TMI but I threw up for 15 hours straight, so as you can imagine my muscles and stomach are still tender. Following that, I have been traveling. Hanging with family in Chicago for New Years. I feel like it’s been ages since I posted as a result!

I can’t believe there’s only one more day in 2016. I’ll try to find some time to go through my posts and pick a few of my favorites for a wrap on the year. It’s a little difficult being out with family. So many crazy moments and loud family members. Gets a little hard to find focus time. Should try to get up early since this is the family that sleeps in.

I’ll def continue posting during 2017 so I’ll have more to come. Maybe less frequently since I tried to do it every night this year. I plan to shift the focus of this blog closer toward art and animation. This year was self-centered since I using it as a way to improve personal habits and keep track of progress. The blog itself wasn’t exactly honed on one theme and mostly for myself. With the Gary Vaynerchuk brainwashing, I’ve been conditioned to make the blog have value so the blog will def be better. I’ll take a week off so I can update the site with proper goals in mind. I’ll need it to go with the finalize rebrand on my portfolio.

I have a few ideas I’m thinking about committing to for the next year Maybe another 365 lettering or a drawing project for 2017? I’m still musing. I’ll let you know tomorrow.

Well enjoy your last day of 2016 (or Happy New Year if you’re ahead of me time wise) and celebrate! One more post coming your way in this year!

❤ Kendall

So much to do

It’s always great to see family. Didn’t get a ton done today but hung out with the fam which is awesome. Upcoming projects are on the way and catching up on others. Lots of animations to do and not a ton of time to get them all in. Additionally, I now need to find time to get to a doctor. My hip has gone on the fritz. Can’t find a comfortable position for sitting, standing, or lying down. Resulting in some terrible concentration, but I’m pushing through to get these projects done. Lots of Advil and attempts to rest, but not really working out since I’ve been trying to finish Christmas shopping. But time to stop complaining because I have work to do.

I am starting a new planning system for 2017. Trying out the Passion Planner. Hope that this method will help for the year and stick past January. The only thing that’s ever stuck has been the Bullet Journal, but I’m optimistic because the Passion Planner has reflection writings at the end of each month. I love looking back on the month and thinking about what I can do better. I’ve started filling out parts of it and will let you know how it works.

Some projects being released Friday so stay tuned to the blog and my twitter for updates. Hopefully, I’ll get some sleep and still have some fun.

Xmas Gift Drawings

I drew a dog. Now I have to finish shading it and colorize before drawing another dog. Also started some other work for the holiday gifting. Just a lot of animation stuff to do as well as working on things for the Adobe Creative Residency. Starting on some of the projects related to the ideas I have. Also gotta get this blog in order. I haven’t decided if I want to continue posting in 2017. If I do then I need to organize the blog better, especially with all the art I create. I’ll let you know in the upcoming weeks what I decide.

Motivation

Spent all day hanging with the fam. It was fun. I was in no way productive as a result, but family time is always important. We bought our Christmas tree, went to a craft market, and found gifts. Since I didn’t do any work today I now have to make up for all that tomorrow. Need to get some sleep and wake up early to work. Especially since I got another idea for an animation project…I have so many on my list, but time and money are killing the mood! Guess that’s why I’m applying for the Adobe Creative Residency. Would be amazing to just work on these head animations forever and ever without worry.

If you’re in need of a good motivational video watch as Gary Vaynerchuk calls a bunch of his fans. Even just watching 10 minutes gets you pumped to get some hustle on! I know I’m inspired to make tomorrow fantastically productive! Gonna get some good rest so that I can get shit done!

Updates

Welp rebranding progress is stalled. On the other side of the productivity stick, I finally backed up my computer files, deleted a ton of photos I didn’t need, and updated my computer OS from Snow Leopard to Sierra. Quite a fun and big change I’ve been procrastinating on for the last two years. Six full hours of updating. So fun…so fun. #sarcasm

Spent the earlier half of the day planning for the Adobe Creative Residency proposal. I’m thinking I’ll do some Christmas and/or end of the year mographs for the examples of what I want to create. Still trying to narrow down the main project I want to get done, just know it’s motion design. Too many ideas for animations popping into my head and I find myself adding more every time I open a word doc or notebook. Consulting friends about the projects I have and trying to decide.

Other news is lots of crazy startup things going on and finding/making gifts for the 25th is getting hectic. Still working on getting my schedule together. I need to make one and stick to it. On top of that some internship applications opened so I’m working on applying for those at the same time. Just need to go to coffices more frequently. The other day I didn’t make it to one but I did work at my kitchen table so it helped break up the monotony. Tomorrow I’ll be going into town which helps with time management. I’m always more mindful when I have a schedule to keep.

Still obsessing over the Yule Log  videos and music. That looping music is perfect for concentration. I’ve had that on every time I start working. Although while waiting for all the updates I spent a lot of time writing in my notebook and playing games. I wanted to get some animating in but updates. Plus my Cintiq is acting up. -cry- I’m just thankful it’s still alive. I’ve had it since my junior/sophomore year of high school…which was 6+ years ago. Still painful to know that it’s old and surprised it’s still alive. Cross fingers it makes it to 2017.

Time to get some reading in and sleep. Excited to get some work done tomorrow!

~Kendall

Er…

One of those nights where I got so wrapped up in my thoughts I almost forgot to post! Obsessing over the Adobe Creative Residency. I attended a meeting tonight where I got to meet Paul Trani, the Sr. Adobe Creative Cloud Evangelist. Learned a few new tricks for using the Adobe products and about new products. Afterward, I asked him for some advice for the proposal. Since then I keep zoning out with ideas.

I am really stoked to work on my proposal. Aiming for a first draft Monday, of course after the rebrand which I want up tomorrow. I am waiting to hear about a seasonal job position which will mean absolutely no sleep if I get it. Yay, this is going to be an interesting month! No sleep and lots of hard work coming. Smells like finals. A lot of work and not enough time, but will find some way to finish it all.
