So much to do

It’s always great to see family. Didn’t get a ton done today but hung out with the fam which is awesome. Upcoming projects are on the way and catching up on others. Lots of animations to do and not a ton of time to get them all in. Additionally, I now need to find time to get to a doctor. My hip has gone on the fritz. Can’t find a comfortable position for sitting, standing, or lying down. Resulting in some terrible concentration, but I’m pushing through to get these projects done. Lots of Advil and attempts to rest, but not really working out since I’ve been trying to finish Christmas shopping. But time to stop complaining because I have work to do.

I am starting a new planning system for 2017. Trying out the Passion Planner. Hope that this method will help for the year and stick past January. The only thing that’s ever stuck has been the Bullet Journal, but I’m optimistic because the Passion Planner has reflection writings at the end of each month. I love looking back on the month and thinking about what I can do better. I’ve started filling out parts of it and will let you know how it works.

Some projects being released Friday so stay tuned to the blog and my twitter for updates. Hopefully, I’ll get some sleep and still have some fun.

Motivation

Spent all day hanging with the fam. It was fun. I was in no way productive as a result, but family time is always important. We bought our Christmas tree, went to a craft market, and found gifts. Since I didn’t do any work today I now have to make up for all that tomorrow. Need to get some sleep and wake up early to work. Especially since I got another idea for an animation project…I have so many on my list, but time and money are killing the mood! Guess that’s why I’m applying for the Adobe Creative Residency. Would be amazing to just work on these head animations forever and ever without worry.

If you’re in need of a good motivational video watch as Gary Vaynerchuk calls a bunch of his fans. Even just watching 10 minutes gets you pumped to get some hustle on! I know I’m inspired to make tomorrow fantastically productive! Gonna get some good rest so that I can get shit done!

Dino Updates & Planets

Imamakeathing. Worked on a class for Skillshare today. I decided to make a class on how to create a planet in photoshop. More updates on that later since will have to film and edit the short video classes together. You can see a quick example of what I’m aiming for below. Just a very simple class to learn basics of photoshop blend modes, brushes, masks, and filters.

I originally had the plan to do some lettering, but I didn’t feel comfortable teaching it because most lettering skills I’ve learned come from Skillshare. No need to over saturate the market when I can direct people to the classes I learned from. Plus, I feel this style is underrated and super easy to teach. I have a lot of photoshop knowledge so I want to teach what I know and understand. I’ve been using photoshop since my middle school days so it’ll be nice to teach some of the methods I’ve learned.

On another note, I have a silly animated dinosaur which I’m still debating is the right type of animation for the application I’m applying for. I don’t want to push the project longer than tomorrow so just whipping up quick animations styles. I love the tribal look but am iffy on the ‘rawr’ part. I don’t think I have enough time to test walk cycles out, but it’d be a fun challenge for the future. Colors still being picked and still deciding how to accurately put into the application without disrupting the flow. It’s relevant but I have to make sure the hierarchy is the right balance of animation skills and good responses for questions.

Excited for what tomorrow brings! I have to get some overdue lettering done for a friend, some reading, get the rebrand finalized, and finish a job application…all while still hanging with the fam. If it gets too hectic the reading might get thrown to the last moment. Hope not, I have a ton of library books I want to finish before they get returned! Night friends! Hope your days are productive!

Dinosaur

I drew a dinosaur. Mind you this is relevant for a job application…well partially relevant. I suppose I don’t actually need to be drawing it…but I want to. This is just a sketch, I got carried away with the drawing. Plan to simplify down the dinosaur into some shapes I can animate and do some more research on possible movements. For now enjoy this doodle. I will have a different version of it tomorrow or a different type of dino. Depends on time.

Updates

Welp rebranding progress is stalled. On the other side of the productivity stick, I finally backed up my computer files, deleted a ton of photos I didn’t need, and updated my computer OS from Snow Leopard to Sierra. Quite a fun and big change I’ve been procrastinating on for the last two years. Six full hours of updating. So fun…so fun. #sarcasm

Spent the earlier half of the day planning for the Adobe Creative Residency proposal. I’m thinking I’ll do some Christmas and/or end of the year mographs for the examples of what I want to create. Still trying to narrow down the main project I want to get done, just know it’s motion design. Too many ideas for animations popping into my head and I find myself adding more every time I open a word doc or notebook. Consulting friends about the projects I have and trying to decide.

Other news is lots of crazy startup things going on and finding/making gifts for the 25th is getting hectic. Still working on getting my schedule together. I need to make one and stick to it. On top of that some internship applications opened so I’m working on applying for those at the same time. Just need to go to coffices more frequently. The other day I didn’t make it to one but I did work at my kitchen table so it helped break up the monotony. Tomorrow I’ll be going into town which helps with time management. I’m always more mindful when I have a schedule to keep.

Still obsessing over the Yule Log  videos and music. That looping music is perfect for concentration. I’ve had that on every time I start working. Although while waiting for all the updates I spent a lot of time writing in my notebook and playing games. I wanted to get some animating in but updates. Plus my Cintiq is acting up. -cry- I’m just thankful it’s still alive. I’ve had it since my junior/sophomore year of high school…which was 6+ years ago. Still painful to know that it’s old and surprised it’s still alive. Cross fingers it makes it to 2017.

Time to get some reading in and sleep. Excited to get some work done tomorrow!

Almost Done

-yawn- Lettering all done for the Startup Weekend Post. Just need to edit the writing and post it here as well as Medium. I’m gonna save for the morning due to sleepiness.

Spent today walking in the snow and handing out resumes. I dislike the process of online job applications. I found myself enjoying walking up to people and handing a physical copy of a resume to them. It’s easier to gauge a reaction and if the workplace will be fun and encouraging. I have to do a couple follow-up emails, but I can tell you that there are a couple places I would prefer just based on the engagement with people. This surprises me because those are the places I thought would already have help for the holiday season and would turn me away.

I’m doing that yawning thing so time to tap out. Here’s an entertaining video to watch.

I’m jealous of their rhythm and basketball skills.

Refocus

Made so much progress on a lettering for the Startup Weekend post, but it’s not quite done. It’s outlined and mostly inked, but still has some finishing touches I want to do tomorrow. I’m getting sleepy which leads to mistakes. Would rather sleep and finish in the morning then press on and end up with wobbles.

I realize I abandoned the 30 Days of Productivity challenge I started. I have to decide if I want to bring it back, but I can’t say that I’ve been super lazy recently. I do need to refocus efforts on the job search. I’m going out tomorrow with a bunch of resumes to hunt for seasonal positions. Not excited, but I’ve been saying I need to get one for months now…so need to suck it up. Gah, reading back over that just makes me realize how whiny I’ve been this entire year. I revisit that idea at least once a month. Really need to stop complaining.

I’m having one of those moments where I reflect upon on the ‘fails’ of this year…the year isn’t even over. Realizing there’s only one month left and I haven’t accomplished all these goals I set out on. I’ve done a lot, but I’ve also wasted a lot of time and opportunities. Trying not to regret anything. Just trying to figure out what I can get done before the year ends and what I need to do to accomplish these goals.

With one full month of the year left I want to make a couple focused goals for myself. I’ve gone through a lot of different mindsets and ideas over this year, so the goals I made in January have changed a bit.

  1. Make one more animation. Either a general Holiday animation or a specific Christmas Present for a family member. I want to challenge myself to make a narrative piece.
  2. Proposal for the Adobe Creative Residency drafted. I think I’ve neglected to say that I am applying for the residency, but I am. I want to make some really fun animations and work with people from Adobe. I’ve spent a large portion of the year thinking about this and feel that I would thrive in that environment. I’m not positive on what my project is going to be about, but I have a couple projects I want to test out this month.
  3. Apply for a few more jobs and internships in case I don’t get the residency. If it doesn’t work out I want to make sure that I’m still learning.

There are other goals, but I am prioritizing these three. Only one full month left of 2016. It’s time to focus and get shit done.

Life Updates | November

I spent a lot of time trying to illustrate one of my characters for my novel in photoshop tonight…I learned that I really need to practice faces. Gonna come back to that one and show you when it stops being Captain Jack Sparrow because I keep making his eyelashes too thick.

Novel wise I had lots of chances to write today, but I’ve been in a little funk the last couple days, so didn’t really do so well on that front. I’m also struggling with productivity in general. I think it’s partially not exercising. I fell out of my morning routine of walking about a month ago. I’m going to try to bring that back either tomorrow or Friday. I’ve been overthinking a lot of tasks on top of that. Need to work on ways of breaking that cycle.

Basically, I really need to kickstart a routine again. I’ve been frustrated with my lack of accomplishments recently and a new routine would be useful in fixing that. Also need to use Citrus liberally. That chrome app is 60 percent of the reason I’ve accomplished anything at all the last two days. The other 40 comes from music and white noise generators. Rain sounds always help me focus.

Will update you tomorrow on Nano progress and hopefully have a few sketches for you. I’m heading to Denver in the evening so I’m not sure what I’ll get done. Although always excited to listen to a podcast during that long bus ride!

Title Sequence | WIP resume

Title sequence updates again! Most of my difficulties have lay within my lack of boards for the actual titles. Last week I had planned to just animate with shape layers well into the night, but after working these today I realize I should have had them done way earlier. Just thankful that the contest deadline got extended. I’m starting to wonder if I’d been able to finish at all. I think I would have done something, maybe not a great animation, but I would have finished. So thankful I have time to really hone and finesse this.

Below are the boards with text which is what I felt has been missing the last couple days. Animation resumes tomorrow. I plan on getting a better grasp of the timing and chronological order I want. Also I want to work on sound design since I have more time. Excited to get back into the groove of animating this!

Extended Deadlines are the Best

Good news, I can sleep tonight. After all that stress about making the deadline for the Pond5 Title Sequence contest this week they extended the contest till the 30th!!! I CAN SLEEP GUYS. SLEEEEEEEP. Which is important because I have a lot of networking opportunities tomorrow…after the 4 I’ve already done this week….so much follow up. I’m so tired, but having so much fun. Denver Startup Week is so amazing!

Since the contest is extended I halted my hasty animating. Now I can focus on making good animations and finessing, rather than rushing. Still going to hustle and get more animation done tonight, but now I can stop at a reasonable time like midnight. There’s no need for me to look and feel like my animation right now.

Here’s a short preview. Ignore the real cursor. If it wasn’t obvious I was prepared for a long night considering how tired I’ve been from Startup Week. Glad I can relax a little bit. Still got tons to do, but now I can have better animation!!!
