2016 Highlights & Review

Here are some highlights from 2016 and my New Year’s Resolutions.

It’s interesting looking at to what this blog evolved to. It started with stories and then turned into this journal of trying to keep myself on track with goals and habits. I’m proud of keeping up my habit. Missed a few days but kept to it almost every day this year. Here’s the favorite posts from the year. There’s more of course, but I can’t pick all of them!

Proud of all the hard work I put in this year, but still got a lot to get done. I looked through the original resolutions I had for 2016 to see what I had accomplished and pivoted.

  1. Animation Shorts: Make some shorts to advance my portfolio.
    • Pivoted this one into learning better animation skills from School of Motion. I’m really proud of how far I’ve come in animating with After Effects. I feel more confident in where I want to go career-wise as a result.
    • Created some GIFs and worked on a couple larger animations. Some are not finished but I hope to finish them in January.
  2. Stories: Learn how to tell better ones
    • Changed this to learning through watching and analyzing short animations. I wrote a few stories through the year, but I changed focus to learning stories for animation and film.
  3. Minimalism: Start getting rid of things that don’t add value to my life.
    • I never made a full commitment to this one so…It did save me many times during the year when I did want to buy objects. A good reminder to check if I actually needed it or if I just wanted it. Still need to clean out and donate many things, though.
  4. A career job: Get a career job in graphic design.
    • Got one at the beginning of the year, but after that, I kind of dwindled. I lost a lot of confidence after I had to turn down a freelance project for the first time. November’s Startup Weekend really helped bring back that confidence. I think I will be able to focus better and apply for many things out of my comfort zone now.
  5. Read more.
    • I’m def going to make a habit of reading a minimum of 15 pages a night. I read some books but I’m disappointed in the amount of reading I actually did.
  6. Start a Youtube channel.
    • ACCOMPLISHED. I didn’t post much after the Booktube-a-thon but I started and that was the whole goal. I will hopefully post more in 2017 and find my footing there. I’m still camera awkward, but the more I practice the better it’ll be.

I’m happy with what I’ve done this year, a little annoyed at some parts of the work ethic, but excited to change these bad habits. Can’t wait to see what I make of 2017! I’ll admit 2016 was difficult with all the deaths and the sad moments, but we’re still here pushing forward. I’m just so excited to be out with the old and in with the new. I’m excited to work and make all the new goals real!

Happy New Year friends! Hope you’re celebrating and looking forward to making 2017 amazing! I’ll have a post with my 2017 New Year’s Resolutions tomorrow! Have a great party and stay safe!

Wrap Ups & New AAR Song ‘DGAF’

Finished my wrap up video for Booktube-a-thon. Includes the spine poetry & TBR lettering I never posted.

Since that’s done I’m now currently distracted by the new All American Rejects Song DGAF.

sketches – 1

Mmmmmmmmmmmm….ew….I hate drawing myself. I love self portraits, but pencil & marker ain’t my medium for self portrait usually. I like paint better, but I want a caricature style for this mograph. Paint is okay for this type of portrait, but I also don’t feel like trying to paint when I don’t need to. Plus I don’t have a good space to really do oil in, nor a proper photograph of myself that I like.

Till tomorrow, here’s my few sketches today.

Ojo Caliente – Road Trip Vlog 4

We went down to Ojo Caliente for today. Was an interesting day going through a mud bath and enjoying hot springs with rocks in the bottom. I had a relaxing day and didn’t film much because water vs cameras equals bad. Hope you enjoy the timelapses I made of our trip there and back though. I’m really having fun with them.

I’m thinking I might do VEDA (Vlog Every Day April) now that I’ve got a bit of a format down, although will be changing it up eventually. I’m finding it difficult to get time to myself to really have more conversational topic vlogs. I’ll likely change to that format when I get home since I work at home and don’t go out too much.

Enjoy!

Kasha-Katuwe Tent Rocks – Road Trip Vlog 2

Made it through another day of vlogging. Sorry this one is a bit late. I finished it at 1 AM and decided that I wanted to sleep instead of wait for it to upload to Youtube.

It was a fun hiking trip. I enjoyed being able to hike again, although my mother did not mentally prepare me for the sharp drops that we were hiking up. I expected a hike, but not one quite as steep as we went up. It was a lot of fun, very exhausting, but fun. We proceeded to follow this up with a huge dinner of pizza.

I’m pleased I’m making headway on my video goals since it’s been awhile since I’ve tackled that. It’s also nice trying to remember to keep track of my day to day and learning to put a quick narrative together for this story skillset I’m working on.

Anyway, I’ll elaborate on my trip and feelings about vlogging when I get home. I have a ton of photos and video I didn’t get to for edits today so more things will trickle out as time goes by.

And now, the vlog. More soon!

Sleeping Disease at 40 MPH – Road Trip Vlog 1

Practicing those timelapse skills today. I’m really in love with watching Casey Neistat’s videos so I thought it was time to test vlogging. I want to make other types to videos, but I have to start somewhere, so vlogging a trip seems like the best idea. Hope that you like this. I’ll have another one up tomorrow.

Animation Inspiration 5

Today’s shorts are a bit older, but ones that stuck in my mind. I watched these in college and absolutely loved their stories. The plots are well done and character development amusing. I enjoy the plot twists that happen at the end for both of these.

The Saga of Biorn

This one is a hilarious short about a Viking seeking a death in battle so that he will reach Vahalla, the only real home for a true viking. The trials for Biorn are amusing and watching his expressions of anger at not dying makes the piece that much stronger. I hope you enjoy the humor of this piece.

Unicorns vs Narwhals

What more could you want in an animatic? It’s got unicorns, narwhals, magic, and clouds. Oh and we can’t forget humor. Silly plots are the best. So, I’m not entirely sure if this is the original audio or not. The original version got its audio removed because of a copyright issue, but this one says that they rebuilt it from scratch. It still has all the major plot points and humor in it so this will have to do. I hope you enjoy it!
